We just came from a fascinating event at the National Press Club in Washington. At noon today, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) vice president Bruce Friedrich did his best to implicate IAMS (a well-known pet food company) in a product recall related to the deaths of a few hundred dogs and cats. We weren't terribly surprised when Friedrich had us thrown out of the building -- after all, we were there to remind the national media that PETA itself has killed far more animals than the tainted pet food. And in PETA’s case, it's on purpose.

Itchmo Safety Alert: Melamine spiking widespread going on for years We will just let the story speak for itself. No more denials, no more hemming and hawing by the FDA. Robert Jay Russell, Ph.D., President of the Coton de Tulear Club of America has been writting up information about the mass poisiioning of pet foods on the CTCA's CotonClub e-Zine. He has been pretty good at predicting just where this crisis would go and what potential pet foods would most likely be declaried deadly. Yesterday, he reported "Tonight, the U.S. government and the pet food industry achieved a new low that even I did not see coming.

NOTE: This is the sixth recall alert in the last 24 hours American Nutrition is finally recalling their foods containing rice protein concentrate. The recall covers Costco’s Kirkland Signature Super Premium Canned Food, item # 38436, best buy dates of Aug. 21 08 to April 15 of 09. I identified this company last week on other forums because they were the only pet food company out of Utah and ChemNutra had said one of the five companies they sold RCP to was in Utah. But oh, is American Nutrition in trouble. I predict they will not be able to recover from this one. ANYTHING made by them is going to be suspect.

I have been wanting to write this post for quite some time but there has been too much recall news to keep up with. So I’m just MAKING myself write it. After reading this, you will want all of your pets, especially if they have illnesses, to be on fish oil. I am a vegetarian and after learning about the broad health benefits of fish oil, I became a believer so yes, now I take a daily fish oil supplement. [I read an article about how it was used to help the Sago Mine survivor, which I will post this weekend for you — Wow — Written by the doctor who helped him]. But this post is about veterinary use!

The FDA continues to publicize only “16 confirmed deaths.” This number has often been repeated by the media. Reliable sources report that the number of pet deaths are and will be much higher - most likely in the thousands.
