Corey Stewart Songwriting Tips = Songwriting Zen

April 29, 2008

Hi everybody,

I want to let you know that I have shifted my songwriting blog over to Wordpress and have renamed it Songwriting Zen.

The reasons for this move are many and varied and I wont go into them here.

I want to thank the people of Quikonnex for hosting Corey Stewart Songwriting Tips and my other blogs for the past 4 years.

I also want to thank everyone who has visited my blog, read my posts and made comments. The interaction with you all is fantastic and extremely valuable (even though I've been a bit slow in replying to some of you).

You can now find me at Songwriting Zen.

Until next time, keep on writing,

Songwriting Tip - Don't Put Up Listening Barriers For Your Audience

August 01, 2007

Make your songs as easy for your potential listeners as possible.

I am making some assumptions here but as songwriters, one of our major goals with our writing is that we want more people like what we do and listen to our songs than not.

I came across an article by Sheena Metal which outlines some of the barriers that songwriters put up and how you can remove them from your audiences way.

Songwriting Help - How To Write A Song Today!

July 31, 2007

To be a songwriter you need to have the mindset of one. Always be on the lookout for an idea.

I came across an article called "Write a Song Today - The Songwriter's Way of Thinking" by Shamir Rele which sums up how I feel about writing songs.

No matter whether your life is going good or bad, is eventful or not, you can always find a song in whatever you do... If you let it that is.

That's the songwriting mind Shamir is talking about.

Songwriting News - Corey Signs Publishing Deal!

July 30, 2007

One of my major goals have been realised.

As of last week I signed a publishing deal with a newly formed company called "The House Of Wow!" which is run by a very good friend of mine Dino Jag.

Persistance does pay off in the end.

While there is talk of a distribution deal for my first CD in the wind I wanted to first of all let this event settle in my mind.

What does this mean for me? More songs of course. I'll keep all of you posted on my progress.

In the meantime, happy writing,

Songwriting Tips - General Lyrical Advice

July 29, 2007

Sometimes it's nice to know you're on the right track

I came across a simple article by Jason Bridges called "Lyrics and Songwriting Ideas" which outlines some general principles to writing lyrics.

When I was reading this I realised that what he was saying reflected my opinions as well. It's good to know that great minds think alike ;)

Songwriting Zen - What Is A Bad Song Anyway?

April 09, 2007
Yeah! What is a bad song anyway?

I ask this question because it seems to me that we, as songwriters are experts at naming which one of our creations are 'bad'. So much so that, for some songwriters it stops them from creating altogether.

Here are some thoughts I have on the subject...

Songwriting Tip - 10 Songwriting Myths Busted!!

March 30, 2007

There is a lot of songwriting mis-information out there, choose your info wisely.

I happened to come across an article by Andrew Hacker of ARTS Recording Studio in Newcastle NSW called "10 Songwriting Myths Busted". It certainly breaks open a lot of the misconceptions about songwriting and what the related process is really about.

Here it is for you to read and judge for yourself...

Songwriting Help - My Songwriting Process (Summary)

March 26, 2007

"The more songs you write, the more good songs you write" - cs

I recently held a workshop for SCALA (Songwriters, Composers and Lyricists Association). It was all about 'dissecting the songwriting process".

From doing the workshop I was able to summarize my own songwriting process into bite size pieces. A very handy exercise for someone like myself who (at times) tends to make things more complicated than they should be.

Here is the summary for you. Enjoy :)

March 19, 2007

Whats the use in writing a song if, when you need it, you can't find it?

If photographers can have a visual portfolio of their work then why couldn't songwriters have an aural portfolio of their work?

I have some ideas on this. Read on...

Songwriting Idea #19 - Reading Poetry For Lyrical Inspiration

March 13, 2007

"We live in a world of possible songwriting ideas. All we have to do (as songwriters) is go out there and find them". - cs

I outlined in my last post “Songwriting Ideas #18 – Reading Books for Lyrical Inspiration” the concept of reading books as a way of gathering lyrical ideas.

Since then I realized that you can apply this songwriting idea gathering concept to other forms of communication.

Songwriting Idea #18 - Reading Books For Lyrical Inspiration

March 10, 2007

"We have so much information around us these days, so why can't we find anything to write about?" - cs

I believe that there are so many ways in which a songwriter can glean inspiration. One of the ways is immersing yourself in the media that we are exposed to every day like newspapers, TV and magazines.

It's not what media you use that inspires but how you use it. Today I'm talking about books.
