Google has introduced a new link tag, and it's ultimately designed to tell the search engines to ignore the link when it comes to calculating their algorithm. The intent to keep the link spammers from building their page ranks by posting links to their junk. But, will it work?
This new link tag is called rel="nofollow" and it can be added to any typical href link. By adding the tag to a link on your site, you're telling the search engines to ignore it. According to Google, "From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel="nofollow") on hyperlinks, those links won't get any credit when we rank websites in our search results."
Yahoo!, MSN Search, and other search engines are taking Google's lead and beginning to recognize this new link tag called the (rel="nofollow") tag.
This new (rel="nofollow") tag, though, may begin to be used on many other sites--you can begin using it immediately, in fact.
Quikonnex as already implemented an anti-comment spam system that's working pretty good. It wouldn't be too hard to modify our system to include this link. Of course, it still make take some time for the spammers to decide that we're not a good target because we use this method. Another option would be to conditionally show this tag in the comment links. For example, if the comment poster is a Quikonnex member, then post their links without the "nofollow" tag. If they're not a member, then add the "nofollow" tag. What do you think?

Here's a link to wBloggar - I guess Google created the no-follow link to deter the comment spammers. I think your idea works more effectively.

I think we should just continue to ban the spammers - period.
Would this no follow tag be automatic for non-members or would the publisher have to go in and change the code?
Lois
Ken,
The nofollow tag is added as an attribute to an A HREF tag. Similar to target="_blank" attributes, the nofollow tag would be added like this rel="nofollow". Google and other SEs will start picking this up in links and ignoring those links (possibly even degrading their importance). Spammers have been targeting blogs and forum by posting their ads with links to their sites. Popular blogs and forums are spidered and these links are picked up. By putting in a "nofollow" tag, this is supposed to dissuade the spammers.
Hi Jim...
Not quite sure if I understand the intent of this nofollow link tag? How do spammers use links to spam, and what in SE terms does it mean to use this tag (and where)?
Ken
Hi Jim,
I think thats a good idea. No tag for members/publishers, they must use it if they are not a member. Of course they can become a member as the permanent solution to the new Google algorithm.
