Songwriting Zen - Making The Time To Write Is Essential

Anyone can say it, but doing it, thats when things get done.

The hardest thing about song writing sometimes is the activity of song writing itself. We live in a world that tells us that we have no time to do anything so how do we overcome this?

We overcome it by not buying into the fact that we have no time to do anything.

Society bombards us with images through every sort of media of the latest time saving device or of yet another solution to our problem of just being too busy all the time.

I have songwriting friends that would dearly love to write more but they feel that they have no time to do it. To them I say BOLLOCKS!!!

Society has cleverly turned us all into obsessive time freaks and for what? So they can have a market of time strapped civillians to sell the next product or service to of course. Now I realise that this is a songwriting article not a forum to have a go at the ills of our western world but I just wanted to give you a bigger picture of what we, as songwriters, artists (or anyone else in a creative field for that matter) is up against.

Making time to do your songwriting is essential for being a songwriter. It doesn't matter how much time you devote to your songwriting. What matters is the devotion of time everyday.

If it is one hour a day, (everyday) then by the end of the year you would have spent 365 hours (just over 15 days) on your songwriting. How many songs do you think you could write in 15 days?

Making time to do anything requires at first an evaluation of what you are doing now to see where the time can be made up. In this evaluation you are asking yourself the question:

"What am I doing that can be eliminated or made more efficiant so I can fit my songwriting in?"

The answer to that question is going to be different for everybody but the way to come to that answer is pretty much the same for all.

Try this. Work out everything that you did this week including the times you did them. Times you got up, times you went to work, went to sleep, watched television, whatever you did. Be brutally honest with yourself and write down everything you did. When you finish this exercise you will be able to see patterns and perhaps the answer to your question.

Living more simply with less clutter is the thing you will find. Maybe you need to stop watching TV so much or get up an hour earlier to fit it in. If you can see from a distance your week in detail it is easier to make the changes needed.

Every now and then I do this very thing for myself. In fact I am going to do it today as it is my birthday (34 today, gee Im getting old hehehe) and the thought of 15 extra days to write songs is a very appealing on to me.

Your inner critics favourite excuse for you not writing is the fact that (apparently) 'you have no time'. Songwriting is all about winning the battles that you have with your inner critic so start your next offensive.

Start making the time to write today and the rewards will become self evident.

Until next time, happy writing,
