Songwriting Tip - Never Trust Your Memory

The songwriting process is all about the flow of ideas.

Its important to realise that the more you write, the more you will want to write and then the more you will have to write. Once you get the momentum going it can be hard to stop even if you want to, but why would you want to do that?

Our brains are amazing things, they can soak up information and store things away however, as we get older (and wiser) we start to forget things. It seems we need to let some of the old stuff out so we can let the new stuff in.

Never trust your memory. Unless your memory is photographic you will lose more ideas than you gain.

Julia Cameron in her book "The Artists Way" calls this concept the 'filling of the well'. I liken the concept to syphoning petrol
<>(or gas as they would say in the USA) from a car. Once you get the initial flow established it then becomes constant.

By simply writing what is in your head down onto paper or tape (such as a journal) you are making space for other ideas to come into being and if you keep up the concept of emptying your mind onto paper then you will have a constant flow of ideas coming your way. Its like you are creating a vacuum for the new ideas to appear out of the ether.

Your ability to create a constant flow is determined by how much of a hold your inner voice has over you. If you are in control of the battle then you're able to accept any idea that appears.

I have heard songwriters say that they were merely the channel for a song to come into existance. It's like they were the transmitter and through them the song was able to be received by the listener.

In an earlier article I put forward the idea of starting a journal. If you had started back then and kept on going with it you would have noticed that ideas would be coming to you much more easily and you would be more disciplined about your writing. If this is your first article then (once you have finished reading this) click on the link above, read that article and then start writing.

Remember, if at anytime you think of something that could even be minutely used in a song, write it down, record it onto tape or even ring your home phone number and leave the idea on your answering machine, do anything to keep the idea alive and get that flow happening.

Until next time, happy writing,

Hi Susan,

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you found my site too.

Being a good writer starts with the belief that you are one and taking the steps to hone your craft. Of course one of those steps is subscribing to my channel.

Have a look at my article on songwriting resources, that should put you in the right direction for finding other places to visit on the web.

Take care and thanks again Susan,

Corey
