Songwriting Resources - What Is Out There?

You don't have to do this songwriting thing alone you know.

<>It sometimes can seem that way though. I have mentioned before that collaborating with someone else is a great way to get more of your creative juices flowing however, there are a lot more resources out there if you know where to look.

Im not going to list everything that is out there for songwriters, that would take far too long but what I am going to do is outline the types of resources that are available (and perhaps some links to start you off) and that will start you on your journey of discovering 'songwriting on the net'

First thing you should do is to type in "songwriting" into a search engine like Google and see what comes up. You will get a whole range of things and they can be split up into different categories. Categories such as:

1. General songwriting sites - These are sites that are formed for the songwriter by songwriters. You will find information on everything to do with songwriting and a whole lot more that you didnt even know existed. Some have more info than others and a great example of a site that has an amazing amount of info is the Muses Muse

2. Personal songwriting sites - Same as above but are showcasing a particular songwriter. A good example of such a site with a lot of great tips would be Canadian songwriter Irene Jackson's site.

3. Songwriting organisations - As soon as you can find the songwriting organisation in your area join it. They are invaluable resources in themselves. You will be able to meet other songwriters in the area, showcase your material (if you are a performing songwriter), go to songwriting workshops, get your stuff onto radio. It all depends of course on what services your songwriting organisation provides.

I belong to an organisation called SCALA (Songwriters, Composers and Lyricists Association), feel free to click on the link and check them out.

4. Songwriting newsgroups - An absolute must if you are wanting to network with songwriters around the world. The big daddy of them all is the rec.music.makers.songwriting (or affectionately known as RMMS) newsgroup. Here you can ask questions and get your stuff critiqued by some pretty understanding people. Make sure you read their FAQ first. You can find them in Google groups

5. Songwriting forums/message boards - Works on the same principle as a newsgroup. You can find them in MSN or Yahoo but another way to find them is to type in 'songwriting forums' into your search engine and start visiting them. Some are really good and some are a bit thin on information. A good example of a cool forum would be the Tunesmith songwriting forum

6. Songwriting blog/channels - Just like this one. Created by songwriters or people interested in putting forward their views for the sake of getting information out into the world wide web. Feel free to sign up for this one and get up to date tips, thoughts and feelings from yours truly.

Phew, there you go. Hopefully I have pointed you in the right direction for your dance down the songwriting cyber-highway. If you like something bookmark it and use the resources at your disposal often. That's what they're there for.

Until next time, happy writing
