Can-Spam, FTC and Suppression Lists

Friday, April 16, 2004

The Internet is running hot with e-mail from numerous marketers on changes to the Can-spam act, the FTC and its potential implementation of the use of suppression lists as a solution to reduce spam.

The hysteria is not going to stop, and the solutions (bureaucratic and commercial) being debated just won't work...

These are the problems confronting e-mail.

The spammers are NOT going to stop doing what they're doing, because fundamentally they have no respect for your rights anyway. This is why they continually send you all that offensive spam. Whatever e-mail spam solution is arrived at by whomever the spammers' will find a way around it. This is the nature of the beast.

The bureaucrats DON'T truly understand the commercial nature of the Internet, so any solutions they come up with will be, errr... bureaucratic. This means that generally speaking whatever solutions are arrived at will be unworkable for the majority of people who use e-mail, and in the main will hurt law abiding citizens.

The bureaucratic (FTC) solution being suggested is that ALL emailings have to be submitted to merchant suppression lists before affiliates can e-mail to their own lists (to ensure that people who have indicated that they don't want to get mailings from particular products and services are not sent any e-mail by anyone about these products and services). Nice in theory, but completely unworkable in reality. Think about uploading your list to EVERY merchant's suppression list EVERY time you e-mail !!

The big corporations are going to come up with any altruistic solution to the problem because they want to make money out of it, and right now deep in the boardrooms they're working out strategies to do just this.

There is simply a better way, and a MUCH better solution...

STOP using e-mail altogether for Internet marketing !

Shock! Horror! But we all will receive e-mail, and I have this "valuable" e-mail list (wake up and smell the daisies... cos only 10% is actually getting through to your 'list' now).

So how do you change from e-mail?

Simple... Like any addictive and destructive habit you just have to DECIDE that you no longer want e-mail in your life or you business and DO something completely different. Move to channels.

No ISP's... no bounces... no spam... no unwanted e-mail... no threat of getting the FTC legislation wrong... no need to use suppression lists.

The non-e mail future of Internet marketing is Qchannels.
