"You Need To Be A Little Crazy" is the slightly wacky title of a book I'm reading by Barry Moltz.
I had the good fortune to meet Barry when he spoke recently at the University of Virginia on his whirlwind book tour. The subtitle of the book is "The Truth About Starting and Growing Your Own Business".
If you've ever had a thought - even a fleeting one - about starting your own business, then Barry's book is a "must read". It's a no-holds-barred, in-your-face, realistic appraisal of what starting a business from scratch is all about. Warts and all.
It's not a book for the faint-hearted. There are warts and hard times to overcome, yet despite this, entrepreneurs abound and are a key part of the economy.
My personal library is full of lots of 'How to' books and various 'Guru books, tapes and courses'...but when it comes right down to it, my best and most rewarding business education has been the starting and growing of my business - exactly what Barry writes about.
Starting your business, testing the market with your product or service, providing value to a real person, demonstrating your integrity and finally banking the first check or money order from a real, honest-to-goodness sale and then doing it over and again is what it's all about.
Barry signed my book 'It takes passion, courage and a streak of crazyiness' and I'm inclined to agree with him! My Japanese maple tree growing hobby became a passion - even an obsession - and thanks to the emergence of the internet, my love of marketing and a crazy desire to be my own boss - a business was born - and is still growing - literally and figuratively speaking.
Barry's realistic view that you need to be a little crazy to start a business shouldn't put you off. A little dose of realism after the dot-com-bomb era is welcome.
