OOOOOH that damn Microsoft

Wednesday, March 24, 2004
Hi there; Here's another little epistle in my observations on our world.

I don't know how many times I've heard the expression "ooooooh that damn Microsoft" or varying
expressions in the same vein, some a lot more colourful. Microsoft is blamed for a lot of things, some deserved some not.
I look back over the years since the first personel computers were put on the market and wonder how many of us would be enjoying the world of cyberspace if it wern't for Microsoft.

How many internet marketers would have an audience for the products and services they have to offer if Microsoft hadn't made the internet so easily accessable to those with little or no computer skills. If we were all still running command line software do you really think you would have access to the customer base you now enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, I myself don't care for the software giant with its bloated, security hole riddled, over priced software anymore than anyone else who has to invent work-arounds to have a program do what they want it to. Then you find that the next and newest version of that software blocks your creative efforts. But on the same note if not for Microsoft, would we have Linux or any of the other operating system flavours that are now out there.

Microsoft, with it's point and click Windows applications opened up a world to the uneducated
computer user that would not have existed if not for them or at least would have been a lot longer in comming to the fore. IBM in it's race to compete with the likes of Apple and Comadore created the environment for the existence of Microsoft and with the success of that move opened the way for OS2, Linux, Free BSD, and others. So the next time you blame Microsoft in your latest fit of rage over the trouble you are having with an application, maybe temper those feelings with the knowledge that you more than likely wouldn't have your successes either if it wasn't for Microsoft. Or at least that the way I see it

I would like to thank Lois of Home4Success for her comments - as a writer of these tidbits in it very helpful to see how others see things. As it happens I am in the process of switching one of my systems over to the Linux OS. I have been toying with Linux for a little over two years and have decided to take the official plunge. Thanks again Lois and I look forward to what more of my readers have to say.

Good point James. I think most of say 'I hate Microsoft' but it's more about the problems created by the gaping security holes and the bloated code. I think the thing that troubles me most is the fact that they keep releasing products that require so many fixes after the fact. We pay good money for these products and personally I expect more from a corporation such as Microsoft.

Then there's the issue of repackaging software. I think this is really unfair particularly when I've purchased the software and upgrades for years. That's why I'm personally looking to get away from Microsoft's office package. There are plenty of good programs out there that offer the same and/or better features with a lot less cost to me. I may be with the Windows operating system for awhile yet but you can bet I'll take a serious look at a Linux version with the ability to operate a Windows platform.
