To BCC or Not to BCC
Trina L.C. Sonnenberg
An email I received this morning got me to thinking about the email that people forward to friends and family. This email was a forward, but it wasn't the content of the message that got me thinking. It was the closing line.
It read: "When forwarding, please keep this letter clean by deleting all forwarding information from the subject line and from the top of the letter. > In God I Trust!"
You know, I get forwards all of the time; I send some to, but I have noticed that there are so many people sending these out, leaving themselves and all of their people, wide open for spam. No one seems to either know how to or takes the time to send email messages in a secure way. It isn't that hard, but it does take a few extra steps.
Another thing that seems odd to me is that people don't seem to know what the CC and BCC spaces are for. So here is a refresher on the proper way to send private email...
CC stands for Carbon Copy. This is for sending to multiple recipients with in an organization. This does not hide email addresses from those receiving it.
BCC stands for Blind Carbon Copy. This too is for sending to multiple recipients; however, this option hides all of the outgoing email addresses from each of the recipients. The receiver only sees their own address. USE THIS!
When this is not used, you are sharing your address book with everyone you mail to. You wouldn't give out a friend's phone number to a stranger, so why would you give out their email address?
When forwarding something to share with multiple people, copy and paste. Copy the message and paste it into a new email and use the BCC option when selecting and entering email addresses to send to.
It might take a little extra effort, but your friends will appreciate it in the long run. If they learn from your example, the appreciation will be exponential.
