Could economic troubles lead to health problems?

Today I received and email with the subject line: Could economic troubles lead to health problems? My first response to this was, Dah!
Financial problems lead to stress. Stress is the inducer of a whole host of health issues. Stress can lead to chronic behaviors, such as, drug and alcohol use, poor diet practices, and so on... Stress, all by itself can cause chronic health condidtions like stroke, heart disease, depression, etc.. So, Dah! of course Economic strife can cause health problems.
Is there anything that can be done to ease the pain of the hardship? Of course there is. It is really rather simple; just be kind to yourself.
Make sure that you eat nutritious foods and balanced meals. Now is not the time to diet.
Spend time with family and friends doing the things that you enjoy. This can cost you absolutely nothing monetary, but can uplift you more than holding a thousand dollar bill in your hand. Read books to your children. Read them yourself if you haven't any kids to read to.
Meditate. Nothing calms the mind and body better than the practice of meditation. During meditation the body experiences deep relaxation, releasing the tension in all of your body. Stress is, of course, tied to that tension.
As your body relaxes, your mind clears. You no longer are being plagued by the negative thoughts that caused you the stress to begin with. It is easier to replace what was once in your mind with something more positive.
Part of being kind to yourself is making time in your life to meditate. Stop being busy for about fifteen minutes of your day. Surely, you can spare that small amount of time for yourself. It's not selfish. In fact, you'll be being more kind to everyone around you. You are not the only one who feels your stress. Those whom you interact with feel it too. It oozes from you. When you begin meditating, you will be oozing less. Everyone else will notice.
Does one have to learn to meditate? Well, I recommend learning how to reap the best rewards from the experience. I suppose there is a right way and a wrong way to go about meditating. The object, however, is not to fall asleep, and those who know nothing about meditation may do just that. Granted, when you're asleep, you are relaxed, but your mind is in a different place. Dreaming about the things that stress you is commonplace and doesn't get you anywhere. Your mind must remain awake.
