A Nation of Laws?
There is Only One Answer
Trina L.C. Sonnenberg
There is so much controversy over whether or not the Bush administration officials should be investigated, prosecuted and held accountable for their crimes. I don't understand why there is any controversy at all. If it were you or I under suspicion, we'd already be sitting in a jail cell waiting for the indictment.

We are a nation of laws, are we not? The current over crowding of our prison system seems to indicate that we are. So why is this such a big deal? These people broke the law, and should be held accountable, just as the drunk driver must be, or the burglar, or the drug dealer, or the shoplifter...
Not investigating and trying these people would imply that the laws of this nation do not apply to everyone equally. Surely that cannot be the case, can it?
Shouldn't those who hold public office be held to a higher set of standards, not a lower one; especially the President? I would think that GWB's 2005 statement that "... the Constitution is just a Goddamned piece of paper." was more than just a little treasonous. But hey, he's just the guy who promised to uphold, and defend that piece of paper.
To not do anything about the crimes of Bush and his cronies is morally, ethically, and legally wrong. It is like telling a rape victim that her rapist will never be caught and punished because it is inconvenient. 'Don't look backward, look forward.' Look forward to what? to knowing that your attacker is still roaming free, and that justice is nothing more than a word; a word without substance. Look forward to knowing that you live in a country where if you've got enough money, or the right connections, that you can get away with anything (murder).
I am amazed that I live in a country where a president can get away with sending troops off to fight and die in an illegal war, permit kidnapping and torture... but a man, who steals billions of dollars, goes to prison for 150 years. Why is money worth more than human life?
It is not backward looking to finish unfinished business. It is the righting of a wrong. It is forward moving. History tends to repeat itself when we fail to learn from the mistakes of the past.
The rest of the world is watching us to see how we are going to handle this issue. If we sweep it under the rug, we will loose whatever credibility we have left with the international community. If we show the world that we are not afraid to punish our own people for crimes against the international community, we will build significantly more credibility.
We are a great nation. We must prove it. We must show the world that we are not a reflection of our last president, and that he is not a reflection of us. We are better than our last president, and we must be able to admit that his election was the greatest error ever made on the part of the American people.
It is time to tie up these loose ends; show the rest of the world that we are a nation of laws, and move on.
