The Subject Is Trickery

I Guarantee You Get Paid
Trina L.C. Sonnenberg

I Guarantee You Get Paid

That is a risky statement if I ever saw one. The only guarantees in life are death, and taxes; we all know that... Don't we?

I am so totally amazed at how many people fall for a line like that. Yet, scores do fall for it, and hard too.

The title of this piece, I Guarantee You Get Paid, is the subject line in a slew of classifieds I received this week. Talk about a deceptive subject line. I'm glad I don't send the Cheap Seats out to subscribers via email, or run email top sponsor ads either. If it were even legal to make that statement, web sites would not contain earnings disclaimers.

What really is a cause for concern is the fact that most of the people using these ads and subject lines are folks who are using pre-written copy provided by so-called gurus. They are learning to spam from those million dollar earners. Here's a tip: They are getting filthy rich from the efforts of others, while teaching those people how to do business unethically, and illegally. These people are making money teaching people the wrong things. So don't buy into their crap. They don't care if someone else gets busted for spam, while promoting their ads; including you.

Be a smart marketer and read the advertisements you post before you hit submit. Make sure that you are compliant. Alter those ads so that they follow the CAN SPAM ACT guidelines.

Here's a short list of subject lines you should never, ever use:

NOTIFICATION OF PAYMENT RECEIVED
YOU'VE MADE A SALE
YOU'VE JUST WON (unless it honestly applies)
I GUARANTEE YOU GET PAID
YOU'VE JUST EARNED
And so on...

Anything that can be construed as misleading will get you black-listed, fined, possibly thrown in jail... In other words, completely shut down... FUBAR.

Grab the reader's attention, yes; but don't use trickery to do it. Be creative.

I can change the subject line of your ad, if you tell me which ad is yours.

I wrote this article to help keep people from breaking the law. Someone has to have your back, wouldn't you agree?

It amazes me how many companies give their affiliates advertising material that violates the CAN-SPAM Act. A responsible way to help affiliates would be to educate them on the law.

Okay, mine has the tag line "I Guarantee You Get Paid." Only because the title on the system I am advertising used to have that as the title of their page and everyone knows that google will slap you (raise the minimum pricce per click) if they feel your ad is not relevant both in the keywords you use and the landing page it sends the user.

Now Streamline has changed it's title and I can change the tag line. With this article, you have effectively nullified anyone clicking on our ads in your ezine, so do YOU offer your advertisers a way to edit their ads?

Thanks,

Ray
