Desktop, Downloads, and Organization
Where'd My Desktop Go?
Most programs available for download, suggest saving to your desktop, so that you can easily find what you've just downloaded. It is just too easy to lose track of such things, if you're not paying attention, and having to search for your downloaded file later can be challenging for those who don't use a download manager. Therefore, saving downloads to your desktop is not such a bad thing.
For those who are download junkies though, this can cause a lot of clutter on the desktop. Now I know that Windows has a nifty little folder, inside the My Documents folder, for saving downloads, but as with the desktop, it can soon become over crowded. But let's get back to the desktop, which is where, I'll bet, most people save to.
Since the computer is supposed to simplify life (Yeah, right!), having a desktop full of icons, representing all sorts of different things, is not exactly what I would call simplification. So....
Let's get organized!
First things first; check your Internet settings, and make sure that they're not set to automatically download to anywhere in particular. Have the settings ask where to download each time.
Make a list of the types of files that you usually download and save to your desktop. For example:
Once you've got your first folder created, start filling it. Drag and drop all the files of that type into the new folder. Now start on the next one. Keep going until you can see your desktop again. Come on, you can do it! This may be a tedious process for those download junkies, but it will be well worth it when you see how much more organized you've become. It is much easier to find a specific file when you don't have to wade through a million others.
The next time you download a file, you should be asked where you'd like to save it, provided you followed the first step. Now you can save your files to a specific desktop folder, containing like files, and still see your wallpaper!
