Our efforts to assist artists here at MCTMG Radio (http://mctmgradio.com) will, from time to time, include "Tips About The Music Industry." One we would like for you to consider in this publication concerns copyrights:
Many song writers think that they must "register" their song with the Copyright Office in order for it to be a Copyright. This is a myth and NOT the case. The Copyright Office only "registers" your already existing Copyright. Note the following:
<
Registration of a basic claim in an original work of authorship:
Forms TX, SE, PA, VA (including Short Forms), and Form SR |
$45 |
Soooo, keep in mind, if you are thinking about a song and have it completed in your "mind" it is NOT a copyright. However, once you put that work down on paper or a recording it is, at that moment, a Copyright! You can "register" your existing copyright with the Copyright Office at any time but it is not necessary to do that to "make" the product a copyright.
We are not lawyers and our "Tips About The Music Industry" are not intended to be legal advice to any artist. Our Tips are from personal experience over many years of involvment in the industry and you should check with a good music lawyer to confirm any legal matters concerning your career.
