How to Identify Good Keywords for your Website Marketing
by Ron Howard

If you want to succeed on the internet you must get a handle on keywords and sooner not later. As you know, a key word or keyword phrase is those words a potential researcher or customer types into a search engine in order to find pages that discuss the topic. To have their pages found when customers are searching companies strategically weave certain keywords into their advertising copy. So what do you need to do to compete?

Win the Search Engine Wars - Select Popular Keywords.

It sounds so simple, but even the beginning entrepreneur knows that it is an art and a science to compete for search engine rankings. A thirst for knowledge will come in handy when trying to decipher all the noise and racket generated by so called experts. You’ve seen the outrageous claims that guarantee a top search engine ranking in ten minutes! Well it’s unlikely, unless you undergo a rigorous research effort and learn through trial and error development.

If you have ever searched for a small business marketing tool on the internet, you know that the first 40 or so sites that come up will be the only ones surfers will take the time to visit. You know yourself that you rarely go beyond the first four pages of search results. Do you want your website seen by the masses? If so, you had better figure out what words they are using in search engines.

Track the Current Popular Keywords - Update your Website Copy Regularly

There are vehicles available on the internet that can assist in identifying valuable keywords. The Holy Grail is high search engine rankings, and the experts agree that you should mount a consistent effort. A flash in the pan won’t do here. You must constantly put your ear to the ground and adjust your keywords accordingly.

Secondly, to really compete, you will need to develop a strategy to maximize your chances. You do this by finding a very popular keyword niche that is not also the likely favorite choice of everybody and his brother. It is advisable to balance your niche needs with the search patterns of millions of surfers. To even begin to achieve this balance you will need professional keyword analysis tools.

Another very important priority for search engine success is obtaining regular access to the search patterns used by internet surfer. Remember those “millions of surfers” we talked about earlier? Tracking their keyword trends (over a period of time) will eliminate some rookie assumptions. Use the knowledge gained to “adjust” your keywords.

Develop & Employ a Well Thought-out Strategy

Finally, there is that small matter of competition! If you perform a systematic keyword analysis, you should also be able to find out what keywords your competitors are using. This will allow you to lie in the wings, just out of reach of the monster websites. Targeting keywords that don’t draw such a crowd is crucial. Perhaps your strategy might be to avoid the power words of a strong competitor. Or you might employ any number of other strategies. The power to do so and do so expediently is something derived from the use of sophisticated internet tools.
