MySpace - Part Of A Well Balanced Music Marketing Diet

Selling your music on MySpace. It was only a matter of time.

I came across an article on The Future Of Music blog called "MySpace, MyStage". It breifly outlines how the selling of downloads on MySpace works and whether it's really going to be the revolution of the indie music industry.

I found the article very interesting to say the least...

It seems an obvious step forward for MySpace. The social networking juggernaut has now grown to around 120,000,000 (yes 120 million) users.

Add to that the changing face of music distribution and commerce and voila!! MySpace as a digital distribution network. A match made in heaven? Or another tool to get your band out into the world wide web.

My personal view is that being an independent band or artist requires having some fingers in a numbers of pies and making sure that you have the organizational skills and the business sense to keep it all together.

MySpace as a digital distribution network is a very welcome addition to the indie music industry. It will be an addition that is going to make great inroads in speeding up the evolutionary change that is happening in the music industry at the moment.

The article "MySpace, MyStage" deals with some real life examples of how it will affect some bands but it's author, Katheryn Masterson of the Chicago Tribune also states that:

"David Kusek, a vice president at the Berklee College of Music in Boston who co-wrote "The Future of Music," says selling music on MySpace will be a great opportunity for independent artists and small labels to potentially make some money, but he doesn't think it will become a huge source of revenue. Most artists likely will sell a song for $1 or less, and MySpace and its partner Snocap will take a 45-cent cut".

As an independent artist or band you need to be able to sell your CD's, your shows, your merchandise, your memberships on your website, your videos.

There are many ways to do this but to do it successfully you need to co-ordinate all your marketing avenues into one forward moving direction. thats where the wearing of many hats comes into play.

I, for one will be looking at this MySpace development very closely. To read the article "MySpace, MyStage" click here.
