Songwriting Zen - Practice Your Songwriting Process

Practice makes perfect.

This old saying certainly rings true for songwriter Jonathan Coulton. His song a week concept is the true embodiment of the establishment and perfecting of your songwriting process.

Personally, I find his story inspiring...

If you follow the songwriting blogs like I do you would've noticed a fellow by the name of Jonathon Coulton who gave himself the challenge of writing a song a week for a whole year.

Well, he finally finished his challenge by doing a cover of "We will rock you/We are the champions". You can read his post "Thing a week 52 - We will rock you/We are the champions" here.

I have been following Jonathan's challenge on and off since it began and it's got me thinking about my own process and creative output (actually, I think a lot of songwriters have been thinking about the same thing thanks to Jonathan).

It is amazing what things we allow to stand in the way of our songwriting process. I don't think that there is any difference between me, you or Jonathan Coulton as songwriters except that Jonathon was determined to achieve his songwriting activity goal of one song a week for a whole year.

Jonathan's exploits is living proof that if you have a songwriting goal in mind and you structure your life around making the achievement of that goal a reality then it can be done and done so well.

I am wondering what Jonathan Coulton is feeling right now?

I reckon he would be feeling pretty proud of himself and enjoying the fact that he has done what he said he was going to do. Not to mention the fact that his profile as a songwriter with all of the publicity he has been getting has gone through the roof.

He was true to his word and he stuck to it. He deserves every accolade and extra fan that he gets.

Imagine what you could achieve if:

1. You define a songwriting activity goal for yourself.
2. You structure your life and a songwriting process around achieving that goal (in other words you make time)
3. You do it.

Three simple steps. How easy or hard you make it for yourself is up to you.

I also found the www.garagespin.com interview with Jonathan Coulton a really facinating read. You can find it here.

Well done Jonathan, you are an inspiration to us all.

Until next time, happy writing,
