“What drives broadband take-up?” is a key question today. Regulators and other policy-makers need to understand what contribution broadband can make to national well-being and how to encourage its development. Telecoms operators see broadband as probably their best hope of increasing revenues over the next few years, at least as far as fixed networks are concerned. The vendors of broadband hardware and software depend on the growth and development of the market for their whole future.

Broadband is one of the "fastest growing new technologies in history" even beating the meteoric rise of mobile phones, according to analysts at research outfit Point Topic.
Its end-of-year look at the world-wide broadband market - including DSL, cable modems and fibre-optic - found that there are now more than 100 million broadband lines in the world.
(note: May 2006, 183 Million BB lines)
