"In a world full of doom and gloom it sometimes pays to not take life too seriously". - anon
This is probably just me going off on a bit of a tangent here, but I wanted to congratulate Finland's heavy 'monster' metal band "Lordi" on winning the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest
Well done!!!
I must admit, sitting down and watching the Eurovision Song Contest is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. To me, it's so bad it's good (and the comments of Terry Wogan always make me laugh).
This year I watched it at my girlfriends house and we were both in hysterics until, out came LORDI.
We both stopped in our tracks and said to each other a collective "what the...?"
The song they played was called "Hard Rock Hallelujah". The song wasn't really much to write home about but the costumes... My God they must be hot in all that material and latex.
I swear that the drummer is the guy out of the movie 'Predator' and the lead singer has an axe as a microphone stand and looks like the older, meaner brother of Rob Zombie.
Now that's Rock and Roll!!
What I saw on stage were five musicians having a great time playing dress-ups and poking fun at the Eurovision Song Contest, the epitomy of pop songwriting kitch. I loved it and somehow I had a feeling that something good was going to happen with these guys.
And something good happened indeed. Lordi won the song contest with a record score of 292 (more than Finland's previous entries combined)
It was Finland's first win and therefore they will host the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.
Some songwriters I know are really intense and serious guys. Now, a bit of seriousness is a good thing but having seriousness get in the way of your sense of humour is a surefire path to an early grave.
In an earlier article I spoke about 'having fun with the muse'. If you want to know what happens when you dont take yourself too seriously just ask the guys from Lordi.
If you dare... (insert mad cackling here)
Until next time, happy writing,
