Internet Marketing Strategy: Why Google JUNKsense sites don't work!

Monday, May 01, 2006

Kenneth Doyle - eAnalystThe Internet is meant to be about delivering quality information to users, right? So, why doesn't it?

Yes, you can go to search engines, key in a search term (keyword phrase) and be directed to millions of web site pages which purportedly will solve your needs for specific information.

However, with few exceptions (such as news sites and forums) the information on most web sites is generally static, meaning that the information generally doesn't change...

So, here we are in the much heralded information age, and yet much of the time we're wasting time wading through junk attempting to find something/ anything that's of any real value to us.

Now, I don't know about you, but frankly I'm tired of searching for information on a topic and then landing on web sites which are simply poor excuses for Google Adsense links.

I feel "ripped off". And, yes, I do recognize the fact that these practices aren't going to stop just because I don't like them.

So, why do "marketers" (I use the term lightly here) put up these JUNKsense sites?

Well, in most cases they're using what are called "crash and burn" tactics. The crash and burn marketing logic is this... "If I throw enough rubbish at the wall (net) some of it will stick/ sell.

Your email Inbox is an example of crash and burn marketing tactics. Google JUNKsense sites are the web based versions of this same approach.

Now, I don't click on those Adsense links, I just get annoyed. Thus, my assumption is that these sites don't work for others either, and they also get annoyed? Eventually Google will catch up with these sites and ban them, and then these "marketers" will find another 'crash and burn' tactic to annoy people.

Anyway, moving on...

Here's the Internet marketing related problem. The Internet is NOT a sell medium, it's an information medium. However, when one understands the "logic" of this medium "one" (meaning me, you and my pet budgie) can "sell stuff" on it.

How does that work?

Well, it's all about the "funnel" actually!

Next time you're looking for information on the net observe your own reactions when you actually find GOOD information on "stuff" that you're interested in.

I'll guarantee you that you'll read the article/ web page/ blog and then 'follow the links" IF they're well placed within the content... and within the context of the theme of your content. In short, "stay on topic"!

What do I mean by "follow the links"?

I mean, you as the marketer, have ENGAGED the reader with your valuable information on a topic which they're interested in, and perhaps even passionate about. You have GIVEN before you've asked them for anything.

The reader, now fully engaged in reading your content sees your "in context" text link as part of the content. These links are like a PS. They promise further explanation about something, or are seen as a potential solution to the reader's problem. A reader is much more likely to click on this monetarized text link!

It's what Ken Evoy at Sitesell calls pre-selling.

And all you've done here was be honest. You've delivered honest content to the reader that's within theme, within context and the reader has clicked on the link.

Why?

Because your focus was on giving not getting, and in this process you "got". I just love the net when it's done right :-)

Live Well. Expect Success!

Hello Eskara...

Thank you. I do appreciate your comments. Now, re the spammers (junksense sites and email). Some of these people make a LOT of money. However, their "marketing" tactics are never about you and your needs. It is always about them.

They (of course) would claim that they are providing a service here. Hmmm?

Interesting enough Google recently caught up with the JUNKsense sites with the implementation of SMART ads. Google Adsense advertisers are now able to lower their bids on the "content" network sites, thus the revenue from these "content" sites has dropped off dramatically, and they will now begin to disappear.

The slower path of providing quality content is always the surer path because it is stable.

If you are interested in quality information on proven Internet marketing strategies then I believe that I provide this (right to your own desktop, and without using email) here... http://quikonnex.com/invite...

Hi Kenneth,

Great article. As a new internet marketer I have been through the 'throw rubbish at the wall phase' and fortunately it has been a quick transition.

This transition funnily enough has been helped along by people like yourself and the information you provide. I didn't know any better and now I do because of your quality content. Now I'm on the road to providing that same thing to my own readers.

As out in the 'real' world impeccable customer service and going that extra mile wins out in the end. Thank goodness!

Hello Praveen...

Yes, you're right about... "Whom do you trust"?

After working professionally on the net for many years the trust "measurement" that I use now is this (whatever the program).

Before I buy anything I always communicate with "new" people. I usually ask them a number of 'silly' questions (to which I already know the answers) to gauge their response.

If they treat me with respect and generosity I'll do business with them, (knowing full well that I can ask for my money back from any established payment gateway system because it's the law).

Yes, you get manipulators everywhere; the ones who try to twist the arms of the system to their own advantage.

The mushrooming of Adsense sites is just another manifestation of the same.

I have seen many established names selling their wares in the name of information. Whom to trust and whom not to trust... that is the question!

Exactly Jim. Spot on.

Now, where's the wrench I need to fix that leaking faucet, again? :-)

Great article. Your analogy to the librarian is appropriate.

Would you go back to a library where the librarian, when asked for a book about how to repair a leaking faucet, picked out a book for you that was nothing more than a list of other books on fixing leaking faucets?

Your faucet's still leaking and all you've got is a list of more places to look.

Google can't survive if they can't provide links to resources that can answer our questions.

Hello Butch...

Yes, as you've identified "search engine optimization" is not some mystical science.

It's really just about "honest filing".

At a base level the Google bots are merely sophisticated Internet Librarians, working out where to 'put' your stuff until someone comes along and 'asks' (searches) for it.

So... 'get your filing right'.

So, learning (and using) search engine optimization is part and parcel of your Internet marketing craft if you're working on the Internet professionally.
