Hi Alex,
Just wanted to add my two cents here- I have been feeding raw now for about six or seven years to my Labs and now to the baby Boston, Meg. I had a dog react severely to the Rabies vaccine and you are so right- how do you know? What I have found to be true is that different breeds and even lines in those breeds react differently to vaccine insults. Some you would never know- you can vaccinate up the wahzoo and they do fine, others in Labs especially have chronic ear problems and start chewing on their feet- raw red feet are often attributed to allergies. Other dogs/breeds you see problems with irritable bladders- they can't hold their urine- ever- they just leak all over the place, Am Cockers come to mind, again sometimes called allergies. There is no proof of any of it but a lot of antidotal evidence from hundreds or thousands of dogs owners that say that dogs react negatively to vaccination. The skin issues are so common and actually a sign that is dog is dealing with the toxins, better the skin then what I dealt with!
After my dog had her major reaction I called up Jean Dodds and asked her some questions- my dog was paralyzed in her lower jaw- the Vets were saying no, not from the VX- this was a raw fed Labrador in the peak of health, her first Rabies Vx at the age of 1 year, and she did not go into the Vet for anything else. Jean Dodds (a famous Dr. by the way)-said to me "what else could it be?" Why else would she her own body start eating the muscles in her jaw? There was no other reason- of course it was the vaccine. She is fine, we had to put her on Prednisone, it was an autoimmune reaction and with the giant tennis ball for therapy to get her to open her mouth wide made a full recovery. BUT she also told me to spay her as with that severe a reaction there can be somatic or cell damage to her eggs. That one vaccine cost me at least $3,000 before the Vets figured out what it was. I paid also by loosing this dog in my breeding program and she is a very nice dog.
So with your Sophie, I ask the same question, what else could it be. She does not react badly to the food, no problems with diarrhea or eating. She was not on kibble that long. But likely her parents were vaccinated and I bet she has now had a rabies, it is so hard on them to get all these shots. Her body is dealing with it- trying hard I would say to get rid of those toxins. You also have nothing to lose by treating it as if it is a vaccine reaction- or healing crisis.
My guess with most dogs is there is already damage when they are born- then we vaccinate and no matter how well they are fed the damage has already been done. There will never be scientific proof- there is no money in proving this to anyone! But if we do the opposite we start to see amazing health-amazing vitality and long life. I don't think I can ever vaccinate the way I used to - and it is the law but I detox like crazy if I have to or if one of my co-owners needs to.
So what to do? I use homeopathy, natural medicine and Jeannie has a lot of info- her articles, they are wonderful. You have a lot going for you in that Sophie is so young, get through this crisis and the other side is a healthy dog for life. Hang in there.
