Beware of a new anti-spyware package called PestTrap. You may hit a site that generates a popup with a message like this:
Attention! Your system is under control of remote computer
with IP address 227.4.167.118. The remote computer has access
to the following folders on your PC:
- \WINDOWS\System32
- \Program Files\Internet Explorer
- \My Documents
- Drive C:\ files
Click here to download official anti-spyware software
You're putting your computer at risk if you go to the website, especially if you're running Internet Explorer.
ZDNet reports on this at More super rogue anti-spyware. Installing such programs can put you at risk for stealth installation of other spyware/adware programs, aggressive popup advertising, or worse yet a complete hijack of your computer. Will this one turn your computer into one of the spam zombies? I'm not sure, but do not take any chances. If an ad for an anti-spyware program gets your attention and you're tempted to try it out, do yourself a favor and Google it. In PestTrap's case, there are very few listings for it under "pesttrap anti-spyware". Not many folks are talking about it either good or bad. "Norton anti-spyware" on the other hand presents over 2 million results. It's either so new that you'd be a beta tester for the company or it's as ZDNet says.

It all sounds phony to me. I'm not well versed in compute terminology but I don't think this one would fool me.
