Indie Music Industry - Why Indies Rule!!

If this article doesn't convince you that being an indie music artist or band is the way to go then nothing will.

I have been a great admirer of Peter Spellman (of Music Business Solutions) and am a regular subscriber to his newsletters. I came across an article of his called "The Real Reason Major Record Companies Suck" and thought to myself 'Man, I have to read this'.....

The title straight away caught my attention and after reading the article my suspicions were confirmed "Indie IS the way to go"

The main thrust of the article is a consice outlining the seven responsibilities 'corporations' in general have to themselves and their shareholders.

Peter then expands on those corporate responsibilites to indicate how major record labels (corporations in themselves) would interpret them. As Peter states in his article:

"There are seven primary rules corporations (including music corporations) must obey, and each rule has a profound effect on how music and artists are treated, regarded and disposed of".

For me being an indie music artist is being able to counteract the corporate trends and allow my music to be put forward into the world the way I want it to be done.

I know of some artists and muso's in bands that would give their right arm to get signed by a major label under the mistaken premise that 'once you're signed you have made it'.

I wonder (after reading this article) whether these people would feel the same way? Right arms are hard to come by once you give them away.

The article "The Real Reason Why Major Record Labels Suck" can be found here. Enjoy!!!
