Newlywed Name Change Scam

Thursday, April 21, 2005
You too can pay to have your identity stolen with this scam.

I found out about this one from my local paper. This scam plays on the stress that a young newlywed may be experiencing is she's going to change her name to that of her husband's. It arrives in an official looking envelope and claims that there's a law saying she MUST register her name change. AND for only $15.00, National Record Service Corp. or U.S. Record Service Corp. will take care of all the paperwork for you.

There is no such law requiring registration of a name change with the Federal Government. The companies as for Social Security Number, Name, Address, Place of Birth, and, of course, you'll pay with a credit card. Just the information needed to steal your identity and you'd paid them to do it! Doing it yourself, it this situation, is a lot less stressful and cheaper.
