Tarot Card Readings: Origins & Metaphors, part 2

Tuesday, April 05, 2005

Every word once a poem - I have returned to that thought.

It's such an invitation to think differently about life, to let the sound of words be a place of inspiration and devotion and not debasement and the obfuscation all too often found in, for instance, political circles.

It reminds me of Joseph Bruchac recalling a speech by Tom Porter when Porter spoke some words in Mohawk. Porter described a woman's dress - blue - as being the colour of sky.

There's a different reference point there, a link between colours, fabric, sky. (Our Stories Remember, p32).

When we enter the world of tarot, of tart card readings and tarot cards, we enter a world where symbols, images, titles are poems and metaphors.

Think of the metaphor of life as a journey, which is so fundamental to an understanding of the major Arcana.

It's a description of the heroic path in life, taking on life, being in life so vividly portrayed and embodied by the Fool in the tarot.

Step off, step out into life, encourages the Fool. be alive to colours and verve, and be alive to the essentials.

If we think of a journey as a pilgrimage, then the meaning changes, the nuances are different.

Pilgrimage suggests something more focused, more self conscious, even penitential (historically).

It is generally specific to key geographical locations.

And while that meaning can be expressed in the image of the Fool, it is not specific to the Fool. The Fool's journey may contain elements of pilgrimage, but is something far more, wider, more diverse, even more scattered.

There's a lushness present, like the quixotic findings of chaos theory. balance, unbalanced, becoming balance again.

So in using tarot cards, in working with tarot card readings, allow the flow of intuition to be a flow into reverie and into places that challenge the mind, the place of logic.

Poems, after all, are places of linkage, and they remind us and call us forth to be whole.

All the best
