Reader's Questions and Answers

Greetings Friends! I have receieved a few questions lately that I think would be good to post for everyone to read and comment on if they like. I will try to make the Reader's Q&A a regular feature here from now on. Let me know what you all think.

Question:

I have been giving my GSD about 1/4 c of raw food twice a day along with Innova dry. The raw consists of fresh buffalo, shredded fruit and veggies. I also usually give her a digestive enzyme supplement along with Vit B12, folic acid, Ester C and Vit. E. I wait for at least two hours before I exercise her. Even after 5 ot 6 hours after eating she vomits after running or exercising a lot. She chases are 2 year old malinois. She is a 6 or 7 year old Shepherd. Can you think of why she might be vomiting? There is still a lot of food in her stomach when she does vomit. thanks

ANSWER:

Great question.
Many people have this problem when begining to feed raw. Fresh, raw foods should never be mixed with cooked or processed kibble. You see, dogs were designed to eat raw food and they digest and assimilate it very quickly. Dry or kibble diets are usually made with grains that dogs never can properly digest in the first place and since they are "cooked" at very high temperatures all the vits, minerals, enzymes, etc. naturally occurring are killed in the process.
Fresh or raw foods digest in about 3-5 hours. Kibble stays in the system for about 12-14 hours. Big difference huh? It is very hard on a dog's digestive system to deal with this. If you must feed kibble, feed it at a different meal (if you feed twice a day) or on a different day all together. My guess is that the vomiting will cease. (if not be sure to take your dog to a holistic veterinarian)
You may also want to add a good probiotic to your dog's diet as well.
