In each tarot deck, all the tarot cards will have a border. Some of these are somewhat lavishly illustrated, or decorated. Others are milder, blander, even starker.
Borders are places which define a space.
They reflect our definitions of inclusion and exclusion. They are markers signifying one thing from another.
So they are also points of meeting as well as demarcation.
Where are your boundaries?
In a tarot reading, the borders on each tarot card help us to focus. They draw the eye in to the main illustrations, the chief images which constitute each particular card.
In many decks of tarot cards, the borders are the same for each tarot card in the respective deck.
In others, those borders will change.
They may suggest a theme which fits with each particular suit of the minor Arcana.
Or they may be part of a series of themes within the major Arcana.
I like to use them as another way of doing a tarot reading.
For instance, in the DruidCraft tarot the borders of each tarot card are green, and very suggestive of green branches, the greenery of trees.
They act not only as a border defining space; they also infuse each tarot card with that sense of greenery. In fact, they may well act as a defining feature of the whole deck of tarot cards.
There's something soothing present, a kind of lilt there, almost like the final arbiter of our lives.
In other decks of tarot cards it might be quite different.
In the Rider Waite, the edging is thin black against white, like a sharp pencil line. As a result, each tarot card seems more austere, perhaps framed by a more logical understanding of Spirit.
The point here is : don't ignore the edges, the borders, the boundaries. They can inform a tarot reading.
They can challenge the mood of each card, or they can complement them.
Work within the meaning of each tarot card.
Be prepared to step outside that meaning as well!
All the best
