PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
by Steve Goodier
Someone noted that their life and their bank both have something in
common - they get out of them about as much as they put in. Which, as
far as my bank is concerned, isn't much! But it means I can get a
great deal of joy and satisfaction out of life if I am careful about
what I put into living.

TIME TO REST
by Steve Goodier
It has been said that the amount of sleep required by the average
person is just five minutes more! Too many of us are chronically
sleep-deprived. Late to bed and early to rise. And it costs us
dearly.

ACT ON IT
by Steve Goodier
A little bear cub was confused about how to walk. "What do I do
first?" he asked his mother. "Do I start with my right foot or my
left? Or both front feet and then my back feet? Or do I move both
feet on one side and then both feet on the other?"

WHEN EVERYTHING IS A MIRACLE
by Steve Goodier
Marlin Perkins, long-time host of television's "Wild Kingdom," spent
most of his life trying to put people on a first-name basis with
animals. His wife Carol wanted to marry him so badly that she never
let on that she did not fully share his passion for wildlife.

STEEL AND VELVET
by Steve Goodier
An unusual tribute was paid to Abraham Lincoln by Carl Sandburg.
The poet wrote, "Not often in the story of mankind does a man
arrive on earth who is both steel and velvet, who is as hard as
rock and soft as drifting fog, who holds in his heart and mind
the paradox of terrible storm and peace unspeakable and perfect."

It's said that we begin to cut our wisdom teeth the moment we bite
off more than we can chew. But do we ever feel as if we have enough
wisdom? That we have arrived; that we are wise?

A LOFTIER AMBITION
One woman says she bought a computer to help her figure her budget.
The first thing she learned was that she couldn't afford a computer.
Most people never feel as if they have enough money, and one of the
greatest problems in too many lives is financial debt. Earl Wilson
says, "Nowadays people can be divided into three classes - the Haves,
the Have-Nots, and the Have-Not-Paid-For-What-They-Haves."

In many areas you are knowledgeable. But do you know that you are

Finding Your Note
by Steve Goodier
A short story by William Saroyan is titled "The Man Whose Wife's
Hair Was Too Long But Whose Understanding of Music Was Too
Short." If you think the title strange, listen to this:
In the story, a husband plays the cello and never changes notes.
He just continues to repeat the same note without variation.

TROUBLE BOX
by Steve Goodier
They call it a "trouble box." It is a brightly colored, egg-sized box
found among natives of Guatemala. Inside are placed six tiny dolls.
Families often keep one inside their homes. When trouÂble beÂfalls a
family member, the disturbed person takes out one of the tiny dolls
and talks the problem over with it. Then the doll is set aside and the
probÂlem forgotÂten.

How to Make Sticky New Year Resolutions?
The idea of New Year resolutions conjures up different feelings
among different people. Some doubt the significance of
resolutions in real life, while others doubt their ability to
stick to their own resolutions.
Some feel disappointed over their past failures with resolutions,
while others feel tempted to make new, bolder ones.
So why should one make New Year resolutions in the first place?
Is there a way to turn resolutions from wishful thinking into
reality?

SPIRIT OF LOVE
by Steve Goodier
Henry Drummond has said, "The moments when you have really lived are
the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love."
Here is a story (possibly apocryphal, but powerful nevertheless) about
a man who acted in the spirit of love and what he consequently
learned.

NEVER TOO LATE
by Steve Goodier
Standing at a busy Los Angeles intersection, I once noticed an
interesting sight -- a shirtless old man in shorts and jogging shoes
running toward me. He was in his seventies, short, with a huge barrel
chest. His shoulders were wide and his stomach flat and hard. The skin
on his thin arms and legs hung loose. His body glistened with sweat --
he had the appearance of an absolutely committed runner. When he
approached the intersection, he continued to jog in place as he waited
for the light to change.
