Okay, so its tough to get started and get motivated...so start slow. What's the big deal? This is such a great way to motivate yourself to get moving! By actually seeing how much or how little you are moving about each day is enough to push me right out of my chair. How bout you? Keep in touch here.We are going to cover allot of ground about the healthy way to an effective weight loss plan. And learn how to make it stick!

Sounds so simple, but often the hardest step to take is the first step!

And you've heard this before, that stepping up your physical activity level is a great way to step up your rate of weight loss. And walking is an excellent activity to get you started. Using a simple tool such as pedometer (a step counter) to help measure your walking success will show you just where you have been and a great help to get you where you want to be. Shoot for a goal of 10,000 steps a day; studies suggest that this is about the right amount. I will bet that you will be shocked as to where you are right now! I sure was!

Here are some useful tips to help get you started:

  • Strap on the pedometer that was included in your Cinch Starter Kit.(I clip mine on my waistband) Now wear it every day for two weeks without doing anything to change your routine. The idea is to find out the number of steps you take in a normal day of living and working. Personally, I was shocked at how little I was moving until I started doing this and keeping track!
  • At the end of each day, record the number of steps you took.
  • At the end of the second week, take a look at how many steps you took each day.
On some days you may have only taken 500 steps and on other days you may have taken as many as 3,000 and that is great but a long way from the recommended 10,000, eh?

Now take the highest number of steps you walked on any given day and use that number as your daily step goal for the next two weeks. For example, if the highest number of steps you took was 3,000, make that number your new daily goal. Then every day for the next two weeks aim for your new goal and record how many steps you actually took.

At the end of that two-week period, review all the steps you took each day and decide if you are ready to add another 500 steps to your goal.

So as you gradually increase the number of steps at your own pace, until you finally reach 10,000 steps a day.Perfect!

And don't forget to invest in a good pair of walking shoes, this is really important for you posture, which supports your body weight. And replacing them every six months or so will protect your body from injury.

Working up to 10,000 steps gradually will also help you avoid injury to your joints (ankles, hips, and knees)

If you already have joint issues, you should discuss your exercise plans with your doctor. And remember to check with your doctor if you experience any pain or discomfort that concerns you. The goal is to keep yourself active for the rest of your life, so be sure to not overdo it!

Clearly there are powerful factors that push us toward weight gain and you need to really examine what is happening to your body when we continue to follow these fad diets! Think of it as getting healthy from the inside out, and only once you’re in balance will you be able to lose weight and keep it off. We want to loose the weight and we've got all the desire in the world, but it can get a bit overwhelming. Most of us know that we have issues with eating, exercise and coping. And we are aware that there needs to be change. AND?

Studies tell us that if you struggle with controlling how much you eat, you have probably been brought up to clean your plate. You eat fast and don't recognize that you're full. And it seems that everything we purchase at the grocery store or restaurants are now "super sized", so we eat more than we thought without even realizing it. Do you actually remember a time when you ordered a soft drink at the restaurant and you only got the one glass. Now you get *free* refills and how easy is it to have the waiterss get you another? Furthermore, the types of foods most accessible to us are higher in calories — with lots of unhealthy fat and hidden sugar. And what bothers me the most is the widespread belief that personal responsibility is the answer to our weight and health problems. If people just didn't eat badly and exercised a little more, so we all hear, then our chronic health problems would go away.We are getting so much mis-information about food.

  • Try to eat a little more slowly. If your usual meal time lasts less than 30 minutes, chances are you are not giving your body the time it needs to recognize that it is filling up. You are likely to be eating 200 or more unwanted calories by the time you end your day. Slow down by putting a watch or clock in front of you, putting your fork down between bites, chewing and savoring each bite, and eating without any other diversions like TV, newspaper, driving — make it a pure experience.
  • Try eating more food — but foods that are lower in calories. I know you're thinking that if you eat for 30 minutes, 3 times a day that you will have eaten tons more calories. No. You also need to choose foods that are lower in calories but don't leave you feeling hungry and deprived.
  • Re-sizing those portions that you eat -- Eat bigger, more filling portions of lower calorie food by emphasizing more vegetables, eat these foods before a meal; and make sure your plate is half filled with veggies, one-fourth filled with whole grains or starch, and only one-fourth filled with lean protein.
  • How to deal with super-sized eating situations? Re-size your portions. If you are an overeater, you don't have a good idea what normal portions are like. It's not your fault, you need to adjust your perception from "super size" to a more normal size portion. Train yourself by using smaller plates, smaller spoons and smaller cups.

You will have to train yourself to deal with super-sized situations.Cause they are everywhere and it does not seem to be going away any time soon. This will include restaurants, parties, office munchies, and even how you serve food at home. Be conscious of what you eat. Slow down and savor each bite. It is helpful to eat more of the lower calorie foods. Keep food as far away from you as possible — stand away from buffet tables, serve food in the kitchen and not at the table, ask for the bread plate to be removed, ask for the "doggie bag" to come with the meal and save half of your meal for later (or for the dog). Limit alcohol because it is not only high in calories, but it also stimulates appetite and weakens your will power.

What I have tried to do here is share with you some of the basics. These are no-brainers, but sometimes we just need a re-fresher course. Isn't that the most important part of an effective weight loss plan? I sure believe it is because I am one of those many people that have finally been able to find my own success.

How often have you listened to some skinny minny telling you how to have weight loss or some doctor, often pudgy, telling YOU, the diet expert just how to lose weight? I have been on every diet known to man and we all know diets do not work. In fact to be honest, I gave driving directions by food places. Go right at the McDonalds, then about 6 blocks to the Subway and go left.

Then all too often a quick stop at the grocery store for a deli dinner for the family while I rushed home to get ready to run out again for the soccer game. Sound all too familiar? Well you get the idea. I had a serious weight problem, health and self talk issues.
