"Dogs resemble the nation which creates them," stated Gertrude Stein, back in 1940. Not surprisingly,
veterinarians today report a tremendous increase in the amount of cancer and heart disease in their patients. Younger and younger animals are presenting with diseases that were rare back in the early 1950's. Immune system problems, chronic skin and ear allergies, digestive
upset, heart disease and cancer are all common these days among our animal friends...

Echinacea herb - Herbal Immune Booster For Dogs

Saturday, October 14, 2006

Echinacea herb

The Echinacea herb is indigenous to North America and is commonly
known as purple coneflower and pale purple coneflower. Echinacea
grows in all the states from Montana to Texas and east from there.
Australians and Europeans now cultivate echinacea for their citizens.

In earlier times, this herb was known as "Kansas snakeroot" and Missouri "snakeroot". Native American Indian Medicine Men first introduced echinacea to the fur traders and pioneers. The medicinal uses of echinacea have since been passed down from generation to
generation.

The flowers, leaves, oils and roots are all used in various medicinal preparations. This wonderful herb has nine species native to North America. Systemajuv uses two--Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea augustifolia and these are certified organic.

Echinacea is a popular herbal medicine but does it really live up to all the claims?

Choice magazine analysed the active ingredients of 10 popular Australian brands of Echinacea products. None of the products tested showed they contain enough active ingredients to have any effect on the immune system. According to Choice magazine you'd have to be an optimist to find any effects from Echinacea!

Published Australian University research has clearly shown that MC-S possesses powerful immune-stimulating properties that could be of benefit in restoring a suppressed immune system.

MC-S can significantly stimulate the activity of white blood cells. It increases the expression of T-cells, NK-cells, Tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and Interferon (intracellular anti-viral activity). Its powerful anti-tumour activity has been shown to significantly inhibit the growth of breast, prostate, bowel and melanoma cancer cells. Human clinical trials have shown that MC-S can significantly reduced the adverse affects and incidents of colds, flu and secondary infections. MC-S is safe and exhibits a near-perfect benefit to risk profile for individuals afflicted with cancer or living with impaired immunity. See <a href="http://www.mc-s.com.au">www... for details.

Using Herbs For Pet Health

Using Herbs For Pet Health
by Dr Larry Siegler

Herbal remedies differ from conventional drugs in using parts of the whole plant rather than isolating single active ingredients. In traditional forms of herbalism, the choice of herbs depends upon the dog's personality as well as its medical condition. In modern herbalism, there is greater emphasis on the chemical constituents of the herb itself.

As the prevalence of chronic disease and immune deficiency continue to rise in our companion animals, more and more guardians are looking for more effective and safer methods of treating disease than are offered by conventional medicine. Herbal remedies are a valuable tool in both preventing and treating the issues that plague many of today’s pets.

YUCCA

Greetings Fellow Dog Lovers, This month's Herb is Yucca!

A member of the lily family, the plant is also known by the names "soap root," "Spanish Bayonet," and "Spanish Dagger." The reference to soap comes from long historical use of the plant's roots as a foaming cleanser. Yucca contains large amounts of the steroid saponin, which accounts for its lathering ability.

The saponins in Yucca are a precursor of natural coritsone normally produced by the adrenal glands. Ths makes it a popular remedy for all kinds of inflammation, such as arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis, colitis, and other inflammatory conditions

Hawthorne

Greetings Fellow Dog Lovers, Since we have been talking about heart health for our dogs lately I thought our herb for the month would be Hawthorne .

Hawthorne is a spiny shrub that has been traditionally used as a heart tonic in European herbal medicine. The primary active ingredients, the proanthocyanidins, are responsible for the red-to-blue color of many fruits, such as blueberries, grapes, and blackberries. The proanthocyanidins, and a related group of ingredients, the anthocyanidins, are known as potent antioxidants and for their protective effects on the heart and arteries.
