SWEET POTATO CHEWS FOR DOGS

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

JeanE's Healthy Recipe Corner

SWEET POTATO CHEWS FOR DOGS

(Always Use Organic When You Can)

Wash a sweet potato (yam) the really orange variety, and cut down the middle

lengthwise.
Then cut long lengthwise slices about 1/3 of an inch wide and place them in a single layer on a cookie sheet.
Put in the oven at 250 degrees for about 3 hours. This leaves them kind of chewy but you could also bake them a little longer to get them crunchy.

Healthy Recipe Corner - Cleansing Greens

Thursday, April 27, 2006

JeanE's Healthy Recipe Corner

Spring Cleaning can mean cleaning the toxins from our pets bodies too!

Spring cleansing with this Blended Greens recipe- helps to flush those toxins before they seep in deep. When you see how green this recipe whips up you too will feel clean.

We should do what ever we can to help eliminate the amount of chemicals our dogs are exposed to, but life is not always that free of toxins. Think of where those paws go in a day; parks with fertilizers, de-icing chemicals on the sidewalk, water pollution they swim in, air pollutants, carpet and car cleaning agents, etc. Now can you count how many times your pet licks himself clean in a day?

This is a nice mix of some cleansing herbs and veggies that can be mixed into a fresh raw diet, home cooked diet or this mix can be used all by its self to aid in a 1 day fast for your dog.

(Organic, fresh ingredients are recommended)

2 cup spinach (washed)
1 medium zucchini (chopped into chunks)
2 stocks of celery (chopped into chunks)
1 tsp. lemon zest
2 cup parsley 1 cup chopped dandilion greens (pesticide & fertilizer free)
2 cup clover or alfalfa sprouts
2 cloves garlic (optional use for cats)
2 cups filtered water

Place water and ingredients in blender, puree for 1- 2 min. Serve fresh, refrigerate remainder. Mixture will stay fresh in fridge for 2 to 3 days. You can alternate some of the veggies; try kale, chicory, and apples or cranberries, blueberries or strawberries.

Barking Beef Stew

Monday, March 13, 2006

JeanE's Healthy Recipe Corner

How does a hardy warm stew sound to you on a cold day? My guess is that your dogs and even your cats most likely feel the same way. (Yum!) This recipe can be doubled in size and a portion frozen for another day and will have your dogs "barking" for more!

Barking Beef Stew

2lb beef chuck (*Organic, or grass fed where available)
1 Tbsp wild caught fish oil
2 ¼ cup of stock
(beef, or vegetable)- please note that stock should be made without onion.
2- 3 cloves fresh pressed garlic (stimulates immune system)
1 large sweet potato (cubed)
2 medium carrots ( pulverised or thinly sliced)
1 tsp. thyme (digestive aid, antimicrobial)
1 tsp. sage (antiseptic aid against E.coli, salmonella)

Lightly and barely sear or brown beef chuck over medium heat, add stock and remaining ingredients and , simmer. Simmer/cooking time depends on if you prefer to feed more raw then cooked. Remove from heat and let cool down to room temp.

Did you know, grass fed beef has 2-6 times more of Omega 3 essential fatty acid? Omega 3's are not only good for you and "heart healthy", but essential for growth, development and maintaining healthy cell function.

JeanE's Healthy Recipe Corner - Auntie Cait's Chicken Liver Cookies

Tuesday, August 02, 2005

JeanE's Healthy Recipe Corner

Auntie Cait's Chicken Liver Cookies

4 lb. chicken liver, washed & drained

1/4 c. chicken stock

8 eggs, beaten

7 c. flour

4 c. oatmeal

6 tsp. garlic powder

You can use any type of liver or ground meat, any type of flour, ( since grains are not easily digested by dogs we reccomend using Chick Pea or rice flour) any type of stock. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two rimmed cookie sheets with parchment paper. You'll need two large mixing bowls (one for dry ingredients, and an even larger bowl for the wet) and a food processor. First process the oatmeal into a fine meal. Put in one bowl and add flour and garlic powder and mix thoroughly. Next, process the livers until smooth. Put in the larger bowl and add the stock and the eggs and mix. While stirring with a large whisk or wooden spoon, mix the dry ingredients into the wet, a little at a time, until thoroughly combined. Divide between the two cookie sheets and spread to the edge (or use a pastry bag to make shapes such as bones or mailmen). Bake for 25 to 35 minutes until there are no wet spots. Rotate the sheets halfway between cooking [to ensure even baking]. Remove from oven and let cool. Use a pizza wheel or sharp knife to cut into bars. Refrigerate half and freeze the rest for later.

NOTE: Feed sparingly, these are "treats" not a meal. As with any treat feed in excess could cause loose stools.

This recipie was sent to DragonBear by Tim Ufkes of Chu'Chulainn Irish Water Spaniels, 10/27/00.

Frosty Paws Ice Cream

Many people love to give thier dogs Ice Cream as a little treat in the summer but it really is not good for them at all. Here is a great alternative for your precious dogs and yourself!

32 ounces organic vanilla yogurt
1 mashed banana or 1 jar of un sweetened baby fruit
2 tablespoons organic peanut butter
2 tablespoons honey

Blend all together and freeze in either 3 ounce paper cups or ice cube trays.

You can set it out for a couple of mins if they are difficult to remove from the ice cube trays

Creamy Sole with Summer Garden Vegetables

Here is a great recipe idea from Honest Kitchen Pet Foods that my dogs LOVE! (just ask Chase!)

1 lb Raw or Cooked Sole or other White Fish, thoroughly de-boned & roughly chopped.
¼ Cup Grated Raw Zucchini
¼ Cup Diced String Beans
¼ Cup Grated Raw or Lightly Steamed Carrots
¼ Cup Plain Yogurt or Cottage Cheese (use organic yogurt with live cultures if possible)

2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
2 tbsp unsweetened fresh or dried blueberries

Gently combine the first five ingredients in a large mixing bowl so that the yogurt or cottage cheese thoroughly coats the fish and vegetables.

Sprinkle the parsley and blueberries on top, to garnish. This meal can be divided into single servings to suit the size of your dog, and may be kept in a refrigerator for up to 2 days.

~NEW~

JeanE's Healthy Recipe Corner

Hi There! I will be posting some great healthy ideas and recipes once a month now!

Upset Tummy Remedy

1 C. distilled or spring water

1 tsp. slippery elm powder

1 tea bag of peppermint tea

1 T. honey (for dogs)

Place water in a small saucepan and mix in Slippery Elm powder, stirring with a whisk to remove all lumps. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly until it thickens slightly. After mixture reaches a boil, turn off heat and add Peppermint tea bag. Cover and steep for three minutes, Allow to cool.

Mix in food at mealtime. Give 1 teaspoon to 3 tablespoons (depending on your dog's size) three or four times a day. Give 1/2 teaspoon three or four times a day to a cat. If your dog or cat will not eat, you can give it with a teaspoon, syringe, or baster.

HINT - Makes a great tea for us humans, who eat too much on Turkey Day!
