To be a songwriter you need to have the mindset of one. Always be on the lookout for an idea.
I came across an article called "Write a Song Today - The Songwriter's Way of Thinking" by Shamir Rele which sums up how I feel about writing songs.
No matter whether your life is going good or bad, is eventful or not, you can always find a song in whatever you do... If you let it that is.
That's the songwriting mind Shamir is talking about.

"The more songs you write, the more good songs you write" - cs
I recently held a workshop for SCALA (Songwriters, Composers and Lyricists Association). It was all about 'dissecting the songwriting process".
From doing the workshop I was able to summarize my own songwriting process into bite size pieces. A very handy exercise for someone like myself who (at times) tends to make things more complicated than they should be.
Here is the summary for you. Enjoy :)

Whats the use in writing a song if, when you need it, you can't find it?
If photographers can have a visual portfolio of their work then why couldn't songwriters have an aural portfolio of their work?
I have some ideas on this. Read on...

"There is something about the power of two minds working on the same project that makes it more powerful"
Phillip from Tanzania, Africa contacted me through my website Corey Stewart Online and asked me how he could go about finding a co-writer.
The simple answer to the question would be "just ask" but the art is finding that certain songwriting 'someone' to ask.

Writing a song is like fishing. You have to bait the hook to get a bite.
I thought it was about time I put onto paper what I do to get my own songwriting ideas down.
Very soon on this blog I will be putting up songs that I am working on as a podcast but until then.... welcome to my songwriting process.

"When it comes to music theory I say ignorance is bliss" - Simon James Betts
I hear a lot of beginning songwriters bemoan the fact that they have little or no musical theory knowledge and therefore will not be able to write 'good' songs.
My answer to that is that songs come from the heart and mind of the songwriter not from some mathematical formulae and besides, if you want to learn music theory it's never too late to learn.

Songwriting and Arranging are two different beasties to tame.
I recieved a comment on one of my articles from Eugene G who asks "where can I find work as a songwriter or arranger?" Well, first we need to know the difference between the two actions and work it from there....

I am not meaning to be harsh when I say that.
Some songwriters (and muso's for that matter) believe in the concept of the starving artist. The more you starve for your art the more successful you are!
Hmmmm..........

Rewriting a song doesnt mean it's bad, it just means it will be even better.
Lets be honest, no-one likes to think that they have to rewrite something that they have put in their heart and soul into but what is the endgame of writing a song anyway?

Merry Christmas and a happy 2005 to all!!!
A lot of people make new years resolutions for all sorts of reasons with good intentions but they tend to be broken within the first week of the new year.
Me included.
However, while surfing the net I found a great article that would be the perfect list of things to include with your own songwriting resolutions for 2005.

Remember, we are all in this songwriting thing together.
Someone once said to me that the only stupid questions are the ones you dont ask. I sincerely agree. Knowledge is gained through experience and asking questions and I would like to have a go at answering whatever question about songwriting you care to ask.
If I dont know the answer I'll make sure I get it for you.
