This is the excerpt from the New York Times May 12, 2005 article. Thanks to Judith Brown of PlaceOfPines for sharing it with me! (smile)

Unencumbered by professional standards or government broadcast rules, podcasts can devolve into fits of uncontrollable giggling and include more than their share of expletives. (Family Friendly Podcasts, at www.familyfriendlypodcasts.com, has some suggestions for those who prefer tamer shows.) Still, it is the freedom that has inspired many homegrown podcast producers.

"Firefighters Featured in New Podcast May 19, 2005 The Firehouse Radio podcast is giving firefighters and paramedics a show of their very own. "Firefighters and paramedics are in the news every day," says show creator Jim Goetz. "Firehouse Radio is a combination talk radio and news blog for them - firefighters doing radio right," he continued."
Podcasting News: Firefighters Featured in New Podcast

You know, I thought about going down the street to the local fire station and asking them to share stories, and adding that as an inspirational section of Your Voice, but I never did it...partially out of fear of rejection (can you believe that?), and partially because of lack of time. Who could you interview locally (or virtually) that would have interesting stories?

There is a woman in our town who is giving her daughter's kindergarten teacher a kidney...I'd love to create a podcast from that story too. I really need to interview them...let's see if I have the time and dedication to do that!

This is an interesting article - tell me what you think about text-to-speech podcasts. Do you think people will accept them in place of real human voices? I found out that people would rather pay a little more for a human-read audio book than less for a text-to-speech generated audio book. I had been thinking about doing a podcast on business news, since that's really all I have time to study. I have to think about whether or not I would be willing to listen to it via computerized voice.

By the way, you can create such podcasts yourself with a product called TextAloud - they have some great voices, and I think I will let you hear what this would sound like with one...I'll try to create a podcast with Text Aloud this weekend.
"New Services Translate News Feeds Into Podcasts May 19, 2005 As interest in podcasting builds, news services are emerging to help deliver web-based text information as audio podcasts. Two new services, Talkr and Speakwire, promise to take RSS news feeds from blogs and other sources, and convert them into audio podcasts. The services provide a new option for creating podcast content and generating audio versions of web content."

As you can see below, the networks are picking up on the power of podcasting! Why would the big boys create a podcast when they have all of those money-making sponsors already??? There must be a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow somewhere, or why would they be publishing a podcast? Just my opinion...What's yours?

    Creating Your RSS Feed File

    by Corey Deitz

An RSS feed is actually a text file with the extension .rss . You can name it anything you like as long as it ends with .rss . As an example, we’ll call the one we’re going to create MyPodcast.rss.

Now, inside the RSS file are several directions created in what is called Extensible Markup Language or XML. It’s similar to HyperText Markup Language or HTML.

If you’ve ever written any HTML or just seen the code of a webpage, then you might know web pages are created using what are called “tags” like:

<Title> This is the Title of my page </Title>

XML uses a similar tag system to describe exactly what is inside the RSS file.

The good news is, you can copy another RSS file as your template and then modify it as needed.

Open up your windows Notepad by clicking:

Start | Run| and typing in Notepad then press ENTER

It’s important you use a text editor like Notepad because a text editor does not include any text formatting like a word processor.

If you used Microsoft Word to create your RSS file, it would fail miserably because of the hidden formatting.

Now, with Notepad open copy this code into it:

    <?xml version="1.0"?>

      <rss version="2.0">

I'm sharing the different articles that people have created, and are public knowledge, about how to create a podcast. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, and are not put off by textual how-to manuals, then this is the way for you to go.

But if you need more hands-on instruction, I invite you to join our 5-week audio and video live instructional seminar on recording, editing, mixing with music, RSS feeds, uploading and more. To find out more about the Complete 'Create A Podcast' Handbook seminar, go to 1st Podcast Publishing or go directly to 'Create A Podcast' Registration. We are offering a 128 MB MP3 player as our gift to those who learn to inexpensively create a podcast - but only while supplies last. The course will also be shipped to you on CD when completed.

How to Create Your Own Podcast - A Step-by-Step Tutorial

From Corey Deitz, Your Guide to Radio. So, What Exactly is a Podcast? First: Why is the Radio Guide writing about Podcasting? Because it's very clear to me the Internet coupled with pesonal technology like iPods and MP3 players have empowered everyone with a new voice while redefining what "Radio" is in the 2000s from both a technical and distribution sense. Although I love traditional Radio, I'm also willing to embrace new paradigms. If you're reading this, then apparently you are, too.

    A Pocast is:

    1. An audio file you create in .mp3 format... 2. Which contains your own radio show or any audio you wish others to have... 3. That you upload along with an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) file to a server (your website for instance)... 4. Read More from Corey's Site

Des Moines,IA,USA BitPass has announced BitPass Unplugged, a new service that will give content providers the ability to charge for their podcasts.

This bit of news tell us that if you create a podcast, it is not a pipedream to hope to be able to profit from it at some point. Not necessarily like Rush Limbaugh, who even if he charged only $1/month, could make $25 million dollars. But if you know something that others will pay to learn or enjoy, then you may be able to create a podcast around that niche or market.

What do people want to know? And what do you know that meets that need? Recording a podcast just to hear yourself speak will not get you there - you need to record and edit a professional sounding podcast that deserves payment.

If you'd like to know more about how you can create those professional podcasts, check out 1st Podcast Publishing's new Complete 'Create A Podcast' Handbook - 5 week seminar.

Des Moines,IA,USA Infinity Broadcasting's KYOURADIO, the world's first podcast-based radio station, is set to launch on Monday, May 16 at 9:00 AM, ET. ...

What does this tell us? Someone must think there is money in creating a podcast. I have a friend who is inviting podcasters to sign up for internet radio, and when I asked her why a podcaster would pay to be on internet radio, she stated that it was a chance to get sponsors to help pay for their costs. That made me wonder why sponsors would not want to get on board a popular podcast. If you create a podcast that is popular, I would think that sponsors would want a piece of the action, don't you?

Let me know what you think...

Microsoft has announced that it has acquired MessageCast, a leading provider of automated alerting and messaging technology. MessageCast technology currently supports Microsofts MSN Alerts service.

MessageCast has also announced that its LiveMessage service now supports podcast alerts. LiveMessage is a broadcast application that sends out alerts when information is updated. The LiveMessage service is being used by some podcasters to communicate with listeners via alerts.

With LiveMesssage alerts, users can pick and choose among various delivery options including cell phones, PDAs, and desktop alerts..

This acquisition extends MSN Alerts to new content channels, helping to expand the ability of MSN to connect consumers to the information and people they care about most.

"Microsoft and MessageCast have created a significant information channel for consumers," said Royal P. Farros, the co-founder and chief executive officer of MessageCast. "It's incredibly innovative and effective, leverages RSS, and the best part is the customer is totally in control. This is obviously a significant milestone, and we're very pleased to join the MSN team."

MSN Alerts lets consumers receive time-sensitive information from sources via any combination of MSN Messenger, Microsoft Windows Messenger, e-mail and text messaging on mobile or handheld devices that are compatible with MSN Mobile. The service is currently offered in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, and is available throughout the U.S. as well as select markets in Europe and Asia.

FamilyFriendlyPodcasts.com Provides Safe-Haven for Podcast Listeners

Over 6 million people have downloaded podcasts, but many people receive quite a shock when they realize the podcast is "R" or "X" rated. FamilyFriendlyPodcasts.com is a directory of podcasts without foul language, sexual situations or positive drug promotion, with sample podcasts for each show.

(PRWEB) May 5, 2005 -- According to an April 2005 study by Pew Internet & American Life Project , “More than 22 million American adults own iPods or MP3 players and 29% of them have downloaded podcasts from the Web so that they could listen to audio files at a time of their choosing. That amounts to more than 6 million adults who have tried this new feature that allows internet “broadcasts” to be downloaded onto their portable listening device.”

That’s the good news. The bad news is that many podcasters, in their enthusiasm to exercise their freedom of speech (and freedom from FCC regulations), have chosen to create programs with adult content and language. That is why 1st Podcast Publishing, the first Family-Friendly Podcasting Station, has created FamilyFriendlyPodcasts.com their newest service - a no-cost, ‘safe for the whole family’ Podcast Directory in podcast format, which will allow listeners to sample previewed podcasts prior to subscribing.

Podcasting is still in its infancy. Podcasts are like internet radio shows that people can download and listen to on portable players, like iPods and MP3 players. People utilize podcasting as an excellent tool in combination with blogging (web logging) to help increase search engine ranking. For example, when 1st Podcast Publishing’s Comedy Clip of the Week was converted from an audio blog into a podcast, hits went from less than 100 to 2000 in 2 weeks.

“One podcaster listed in our Directory made an interesting observation”, says Penny Haynes, President of 1st Podcast Publishing. “He stated that podcasts seemed to be divided into two groups: “R” and “X” rated podcasts, and religious podcasts, with very little in between. FamilyFriendlyPodcasts.com wants to fill that gap by providing an oasis of safe programming. The podcasts listed in FamilyFriendlyPodcasts.com will be free of foul language, sexual situations, and positive drug promotion. Both listeners and podcasters who are concerned about the usage of ‘adult language and situations’ in podcast programs will have a place to post and review shows.”

Listeners can search through the alphabetical directory at http://www.FamilyFriendlyPodcasts.com, or they can subscribe to the “Latest Listing” podcast version at http://www.FamilyFriendlyPodcast.com.
