I have always been a "free spirit" - an artist at heart, and maybe some people would say I am slightly eccentric (although, I don't think I am!). I think differently than other people - in a more circular fashion (rather than linear), and, when I was younger, I didn't ever feel like I completely "fit" anywhere.
As I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate these traits that God has given me, I have begun to see how He is using these traits in me to serve others. For awhile, I just considered myself a "late bloomer" - with my beauty intensifying over time (and, no, I'm not talking about society's definition of beauty). But, I understand that wasn't completely correct either - as I began blooming when it was God's time - not society's time, not my time, but HIS time.
Now, I don't know how long this series of commercials have been running, but, I recently saw a Dove commercial where they touted their "campaign for real beauty". I couldn't help but wonder what that was about. Is society finally realizing that beauty is more than model looks and a personality that conforms?
What is real beauty?

"Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah"
~Psalm 77:9 (NKJV)
At times, many of us feel like we have been left completely alone, totally forgotten by everyone - including God. This can best be described, spiritually, as a "spiritual winter". But, in order to "survive" that season, we must remember that we are never alone, never forgotten - God loves us. He is always with us, He always remembers us.
In your journal, take a few moments to consider a spiritual winter that you have experienced. "Selah" [meditate, ponder in quiet moments] on this scripture. What was it that helped you remember that you weren't alone...that God was right there, helping you and speaking softly to you? How did that spiritual winter facilitate your growth?
Christian journaling prompt bonus: How can your spiritual winter experience help others? Take some time in your journal to consider how that experience can be used, with the Holy Spirit's help, to become a beacon of light and hope for those around you.
Happy Journaling!

"Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me! Give me Your strength to Your servant, And save the son of Your maidservant. Show me a sign for good, That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed, Because You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me."
~Psalm 86:16-17 (NKJV)
I'm sure you've heard the terrible pick-up line "What's your sign?" LOL, no matter how cliche it is, people still use it. In tonight's scripture, David is asking God "What's Your sign?" - but, it's very different than that tired cliche.
In your journal, take a few moments to consider the signs that God has given you in the past. Were the signs of grandeur, such as Moses's burning bush? Or were the small signs - little things that spoke volumes?
Christian journaling prompt bonus: Are you waiting for a sign from God as your read this prompt? If so, in your journal, take a few moments and detail the situation that you are needing a sign in - as well as asking the Spirit to guide you, and asking for the wisdom to recognize the God's sign when He gives it to you. Ask God, "What's Your sign?"

"There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; And one who makes himself poor, yet has great riches."
~Proverbs 13:7 (NKJV)
How have you made yourself rich? Keeping with the tonight's journaling prompt scripture, do not think about the material wealth that you may have, but, rather, consider the vast wealth that you may have that isn't material. Consider this in your journal.
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: Think about a person that you have seen (you do not have to know this person personally) that is poor, even though he or she has great material wealth. What can this teach you about the pursuit of material wealth over the pursuit of the wealth of tonight's journaling prompt scripture.

Last night, I decided it was about time for us to make our bi-annual trip to the movie theaters. We don't often go to the theater to watch a movie - mostly because there just aren't that many movies that I really want to see. But, I asked my brother and his wife to watch my youngest, and I loaded my older two kids up in the van, along with a few extra teenagers, and off we went to watch Revenge of the Sith on the big screen.
I went prepared, not knowing what to expect as far as lines and ticket availability. I had a list of three theatres, and a total of 22 different show times - so that we were sure to be able to see the movie last night. Thankfully, the first theater we went to had tickets available for the next showing, so, we didn't have to go on a "open ticket" hunt.
I won't give away the movie, and I will tell you that I didn't go looking for a conspiracy of political or religious nature (I have read Christian reviews of the movie that say it's conspiratorial, but, I just didn't see it - I suppose that you can find a conspiracy in nearly everything - if you look hard enough). I simply went in hopes that it would be a good movie - appropriate for my 11 and 13 year old, as well as the extra teenagers and myself. Thankfully, the movie didn't have foul language, nor did it have scenes that were sexual - and other than the typical Star Wars amputations, there wasn't alot of graphic violence.
I wasn't disappointed. It was a good movie, and still had that Star Wars feel that has always appealed to me. The good and the bad, embodied - the light and dark sides of the force.
One thing I did find really wonderful about the movie was the "humanization" of the chief bad guy. I got thinking about this last night, after we finally made it home.

"As a deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, Where is your God?"
~Psalm 42:1-3 (NKJV)
What do you hunger and thirst for, my friend? Are you going through a spiritual dry season? Or maybe the situations in your daily life are overwhelming you, making your own tears your food day and night.
In your journal, take some time tonight to consider what you are hungering and thirsting for spiritually. Have your tears become your food? Are you having troubles finding God? Write about any of these questions that really strike you, in your journal. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in your writing, so that He may lead you through this desert, back into the Mighty Oasis of God.
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: Consider in your journal how God is your Oasis. Think about the most recent time that you felt close to Him. How did He quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger? How did you offer your praise of His might and glory?

Yesterday afternoon, when I went out to enjoy God's majesty after a morning of rain, I was surprised to find a little "gift" perfectly sitting on my usual chair. It was half a bird's egg - obviously recently discarded after serving it's purpose of protecting a baby bird as it developed. I carefully picked it up, and wondered what kind of bird it was from. The only [wild] bird eggs I recognize are robin's eggs, so this was a mystery.
I wondered if it may be "my" turtle doves - the ones that seem to follow me no matter where I go. Or, maybe it was one of our house finches, or woodpeckers, or possibly, it may be a gold finch's egg. It's hard to tell, really. But, another thought that crossed my mind was how we are sometimes like those baby birds.
They begin life in a shell, and, at some point, their instinct tells them it's time to start pecking - to break open that shell and come out into the world. And, I think many of us go through the same thing - the big difference is that sometimes we find ourselves *back* in that shell - and wonder what is happening!

"The lips of the righteous shall never be removed; but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth."
~Proverbs 10:32
We know that our bodies are not immortal. However, when we live a righteous life, our lips can lead to our immortality - it two very distinct ways. First, as the voice of wisdom to future generations. Second, our souls are immortal through the act of accepting Christ as our savior and living a righteous life - as a Christian. Martin Luther referred to this as "justified by faith, sanctified by works", other Christian leaders do not distinguish between justification and sanctification explicitly, however, it is simply "unspoken", as scripture is clear that our faith should lead to works.
In your journal tonight, take a look at your life. Are you living a life that will leave an immortal legacy for generations to come? None of us are perfect - however, that doesn't mean that you won't leave an "immortal" legacy for your future's future. Consider this, in combination with the scripture, in your journal. What are you doing, daily, to live in the Spirit, and make your lips righteous?
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: What are the areas that you see in your life where you need the Spirit to really work? Do you have a temper, or maybe a quick tongue? In your journal, write a prayer, asking for the Spirit's assistance and guidance in your daily life.

"Who remembered us in our lowly state, For His mercy endures forever;"
~Psalm 136:23 (NKJV)
God remembers us, even when we are in a lowly state. In your journal, consider a time in your life when you were in a lowly state, and yet, you knew, that God remembered you, was watching after you, and His mercy was surrounding you.

You know, I've been thinking, quite a bit, about a mother's legacy for her children....God plants the good seeds in our hearts before we are born. But, a mother's legacy is nurturing and caring for those seeds, helping them along, helping them to grow until we are able to accept Christ into our hearts, so that those beautiful good seeds bloom, and stand out for the entire world to see. A Mother's love helps our hearts bloom.
I am so thankful for my mother (and my father). The thought of not seeing her - even for a day - not being able to talk to her and get her opinion, not being able to pick up the phone and "check in with her" is not a thought that I like to entertain. I haven't always been a perfect daughter (okay, I admit it - I'm still not a perfect daughter!), and I'm sure that there have been times in my life when my mother wanted to throw her hands up in the air and give up on me. But, she never has. Through all my prodigal years - through my rebellion and through my searching, my mother has always been there for me, supporting me, nurturing those seeds that God planted in my heart before I was in her womb, and, I'm sure, saying countless prayers that I would find my way back to God through Jesus Christ.
I can't help but think about the very special place a mother fills in a child's life. Whether she is a mother by birth or a mother by choice, her responsibilities are never ending. And, as children, there is nothing that we can do to "repay" our mother's gifts to us. Her nurturing, caring....her relentless support, her undying devotion. No matter how old we are, a mother's job doesn't end. Yes, our relationship with our mother changes as we age. I know mine has with my mother. But, that very special connection we have with our mother is always there - whether we want to admit it or not.
I know some mothers who are estranged from their children. I cry for them, I pray for them. At one time in my life, I know that my life choices were not filling my mother's heart with joy. But, I also knew that she still loved me - no matter what. And that love, I'm sure, can sometimes cause a pain that only God can heal. I've experienced that - even in my short years as a mother - and I know that what I've experienced isn't even close to what some mother's experience - or what I may experience in the future.
I think God put a very special bit of something in a mother's heart. I wish I could tell you that it is "this" or "that" - but, even as a mother, I still do not know what that special something is. Only that it is. It's a blessing that we can neither see nor understand, but, it is there - a blessing for both the mother and her child - a blessing that continually multiplies itself, it has no end - a blessing that surpasses even death itself.

"The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death."
~Proverbs 13:14
In arid climates, such as Judah in ancient times, a fountain is essential for life - providing water for you and your precious flock. Also, in Isaiah, a fountain was used as a "picture" of salvation.
In your journal, consider how scripture is a fountain of life for you, in your daily life. And, how it can keep you from the "snares" of death - or the critical mistakes that can cause a block between you and God.

"A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance; but by sorrow of the heart, the spirit is broken."
~Proverbs 15:13
Sometimes, we need to take a moment to remind our heart of why it should be merry. In your journal, make a list of things that make your heart joyful.
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: If you are going through a hard time in life right now, a merry heart may be hard to find. But, here's a tip - if you are taking advantage of the journaling prompt bonus today, write a little bit about what you are going through in life right now. It's okay to use your journal to write about tough times or sorrowful things. Then, after this entry, refer to your list of things that make your heart joyful. No matter what's going on today, remind yourself of all those things you have to rejoice over.

Not far from here, there is a man who is quite a successful businessman. Now, there are many successful business owners around here - but, this guy is different. Why? Because most people don't know who he is when you mention his name. But, when you say "the guy who has the space needle house" or "you know, that guy who lives in the Jetson's house" - immediately, people know who you are talking about. His name isn't famous - but, in this corner of the world, his house is.
Many of us will never have famous names. I doubt that anyone will ever line up to see "Dee" at Madison Square Garden, with my name in big bright lights, and I doubt that my running errands will ever elicit a mob scene. And, frankly, I'm *really* okay with that. I love the quiet little life that the Lord has blessed me with.
But, just because we don't have a famous name, or aren't immediately recognizeable, or chased by paparazzi, that doesn't mean that we can't leave our "mark" on the world - or at least our little corner of the world. And, if we really open ourselves up to the Spirit and live the Whole, Holy life that honors God, we may - just maybe - be recognized by our house.

"The wise in heart shall be called prudent; and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning."
~Proverbs 16:21
Ahhhh...wisdom. Wisdom is one thing - wisdom of the mind is so different than wisdom in the heart. When wisdom moves from your mind to your heart, that is really when it becomes second nature. No longer a "thinking" situation - it becomes an instinct. When we have wisdom in our heart, we become known as prudent.
In your journal, consider this. What wisdom do you have that has moved from your mind to your heart? What wisdom do you have that causes a "knee jerk reaction" rather than a think-and-do reaction? Write about that wisdom as if you were ingraining it into the heart of someone you love.
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: Have you heard the saying "You get more bees with honey"? Truly, that is what this scripture is telling us. Except that the bees we are getting is the learning that can only come when our lips are overflowing with sweetness, rather than bitterness. Have you ever noticed how, when you are talking to someone, you are much more receptive when they are kind and their mouths are full of sweetness? That, my friend, is how we increase learning - both for ourselves and others. When our mouths are full of sweetness, not only are we more receptive to learning from others, but, others are more receptive to learning from us.
In your journal, consider a situation where sweetness on your lips helped facilitate communication and learning. On the flip side, consider a situation where a mouth full of bitterness completely turned you (and those around you) off from opening up to learning.
Happy Journaling!

[Friend, I just received this prayer in my email inbox, and was compelled to share it with you. The author is unknown.]
Father, I ask You to bless my friends, relatives and everyone reading this right now. Show
them a new revelation of Your love and power.
Holy Spirit, I ask You to minister to
their spirit at this very moment. Where there is pain,
give them Your peace and mercy. Where there is self-doubt, release a renewed confidence through
Your grace.
Bless their homes, families, finances, their goings and their comings In Jesus' precious name.
Amen
I ran across a picture earlier today of my grandmother. She's been gone for over 11 years now, but, I am still moved by things she said or did while she was with us. When I ran across that picture today, I thought about a little wooden plaque that she used to have hanging on her wall, just behind her rocking chair. It was a simple little plaque - and, when I was younger, I never really understood why you would hang it on a wall - after all, it wasn't much to look at - just a piece of wood, suspended by a string, with a very simple prayer on it.
It read:
Lord, fill my mouth with worthwhile stuff and nudge me when I've said enough.
I don't remember if there was credit given to someone, so I'm not able to give credit to the author (if you know who said/wrote it, please let me know so that I can give credit where credit is due.) But, even after all these years, those 14 words still stick out in my fuzzy memory.
Now, I see this lovely prayer as one that I should fully take to heart every single day. As a writer, I have a tendency to just say (or write) whatever is put on my heart - and sometimes I don't know when "enough is enough." Maybe you suffer from the same "affliction".
Friend, I pray this simple little prayer touches you as it did me - from years ago. And stays firmly implanted in your heart.
Dei Gratia,
Dee
"He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth; But he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he."
~Proverbs 14:21
Have you ever had a time in your life when you were tempted to be angry - *really* angry - with your neighbor? Maybe he is just really noisy, or maybe he mowed over your newly planted flower bed. Or maybe, just maybe, this neighbour is simply someone you know - and not necessarily someone who lives next door.
I think all of us have times in our lives where we get irritated with other people. However, when we let that irritation become something more - a "despise", we are in trouble.
In your journal, take a few moments to think about a time when your irritation or anger got the best of you. Maybe that time is now, maybe in the distant past. Write about it, and try putting yourself in the other person's shoes. Retrospectively, do you think it was as "major" as what you thought then? Have you forgiven that person? If so, did you ask him for forgiveness? <g> Remember, forgiveness is a two way street. As always, write about the situation, emotions, and how the Spirit worked through you (and the other person) in that situation. What did you learn that you can still apply to your life today?
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: Let's take a moment to consider the flip side of this Proverb. "He that has mercy on the poor, happy is he." In the past, how have you shown mercy on the poor (this is more than just the financially poor, friends, consider those that are poor in spirit, poor in health, etc)? What can you do today to show mercy on the poor around you?

You know, I've never really thought much of my natural hair. When I was younger, I was constantly wishing it was thinner or had less body or lighter or darker or straighter, or easier to perm. I was always thinking that this or that person's hair was nicer/better/more lovely than mine. From the time I was 14 or 15, I was coloring my hair - usually a different color every time. It was never exactly what I wanted, so I just kept longing for something different.
Actually, up until a few years ago, my hair was usually blonde most of the time - although I'm a natural brunette. I had it quite short for several years - it was just so much easier to manage - and I also regularly went it for my hair dresser to "thin" it - so that I could "do something with it".
All that changed last summer. When I found out I was going to have chemo, I went to my hair dresser and asked her to shave it - just in case I went crazy and had a problem with it falling out. I didn't expect that I would - I figured I would be just fine - since I usually didn't do more than run a brush through it and throw it into a pony tail (I started growing it out about six months before that).

"When all goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth. And when the wicked perish, there is shouting."
~Proverbs 11:10
In your journal, write about a time in your life when all was going well. Describe the time - including what was happening, what it felt like, and when it was. Think about how you rejoiced with all going well, and include that in your journal entry.
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: The flip side of when all is going well, of course, is when things seem to be falling apart. Take a few moments in your journal, and consider a time when things seemed to be falling apart. Include the same description as above. To conclude this entry, however, write about how this falling apart period worked for good - whether it was gaining compassion, wisdom, patience, or setting you on the right path, take some time to see what good came from the bad period and record it in your journal entry.

Last week, my son and I thought he had food poisoning. He was quite sick - beginning in the wee hours of the morning - and he had eaten "out" late the night before. While he was home from school that day, suffering, I asked him if the food had tasted "off" when he was eating it.
Being 13 - and growing (which seems to produce a ravenous appetite), I knew that he probably didn't notice - but, I thought it was worth a shot. Naturally, he said that he thought it tasted fine - going down, that is. He wasn't fond of the taste when it came back up.
Sometimes, we are victims of food poisoning, and, unfortunately, it doesn't produce immediate physical symptoms. Spiritual food poisoning, is much quieter, and can take longer for us to "diagnose".

"Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge; but a fool layeth open his folly."
~Proverbs 13:16
In your journal, consider today's scripture. How does the knowledge that you have gained through scripture, and through the Spirit's leading helped you live a better life? How has it guided your actions? If this is too general, consider a specific situation in which the knowledge you have gained through scripture & the Holy Spirit's guidance helped you.
Christian Journalling Prompt Bonus: Consider the opposite situation depicted in today's proverb. Have you witnessed a situation when someone acted without knowledge, and laid themself open to "folly" by not acting with the knowledge & guidance of the Holy Spirit? Describe the specific knowledge that the Spirit and scripture have given you that could have helped in that situation.

Earlier today, as I did some research and began to grasp the gravity of the situation a loved one may be facing, my heart cried out to talk to a friend. But, I realized, very quickly, that I didn't have a friend to cry out to.
Now, that's not necessarily the case - I have several people I consider to be close friends. And while I love them as sisters and brothers, I still struggle with the fact that some people I considered "close friends" for so many years simply weren't who I thought they were. That's not to say that they aren't good people in many respects, but, I have learned that some people who call themselves friends can also be the ones that are least likely to actually forgive you when you err.
That's not to say that all friends are that way. I have some good friends now that totally understand that I'm not perfect and never will be. They know I will make mistakes - and I know they will make mistakes. We accept each other - as our imperfect selves - and love each other despite our imperfections.
But, you and I both know that there are people in this world that are not as willing to allow you (or I) to be imperfect.

"Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I life up my soul to You."
~Psalm 143:8 (NKJV)
Morning is such a special time - even if you aren't a morning person. A new day, a new opportunity to walk in the Lord's ways. Sometimes, though, mornings are the busiest time for us in our busy lives. It can be hard to hear God's leading and guidance.
In your journal, take some time to list a few ways you can hear God's lovingkindness in the morning. Write out a short "action plan" of sorts - what can you do, each morning, to be more attentive and hear God's lovingkindness - His truth - His direction.
Christian Journalling Prompt Bonus: What are the things that you are most needing God's wisdom and guidance on at this time in your life? In your journal, write out a prayer for guidance and truth for those things. Leave some extra space in your journal, so that you can come back later, and write the answer that the Lord provides you in the morning's light.

"Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion; And to You the vow shall be performed."
~Psalm 65:1(NKJV)
In your journal, take some time to praise God. Thank Him for every gift He has given you today, or this week. Try to list as many praises & blessings as possible.
Christian Journaling Prompt Bonus: Along with listing the blessings God has given you (as praises), try listing the trials He has been using to refine you. This can be difficult, but, well worth it.
Happy Journalling!

"When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, And when you run, you will not stumble."
~Proverbs 4:12 (NKJV)
Have you ever had a time in your life when you felt like no matter what you did, you were treading in deep mud? Not only were your steps hindered by the mud, but, you felt like you may stumble at any time - straight into the dark muck?
Wisdom, as given by the Holy Trinity, will allow you to walk without hinderance and run without stumbling. Take a moment in your journal tonight to ponder what thick mud is hindering you today.
Is there something happening that you feel you simply aren't getting anywhere with? Ask the Spirit for guidance, and write about this in your journal.
- What is happening?
- Why is it happening?
- What can be changed to clear your way? Do you need to turn around? Do you need to change your steps?

Friends,
First, I want to apologize for being somewhat irregular in my posts the past few weeks. My intention is to post at least a Christian journalling prompt and another post (in a different category) every day. However, that has not been happening every day for a few weeks now. I'm working on this, but, in the meantime, I'm asking for your patience & understanding.
A close family member has been going through extensive testing over the last month or so - and the tests just aren't coming back like they should. She goes in for a biopsy on the 19th, and then another outpatient surgery/test on the 27th. I'm asking for prayers for this family members - she is really struggling with this - and she isn't one who easily talks about what she is going through. I truly appreciate the prayers, and will update as we get test results back.
Dei gratia,
Dee
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; And with all thy getting, get understanding."
~Proverbs 4:7
Take a few minutes to ponder this scripture in your journal. Put it into a context that you can relate to. All of us have had a time in our lives where we saught wisdom. I pray that no one "outgrows" that time. But, wisdom simply isn't enough. We must understand wisdom, and put it into practice in order for it to do any good.
In your journal, consider a time in your life when you had wisdom, but, weren't able to understand - until later - or you may still be grappling with understanding some wisdom that you've recently acquired.
If you can readily think of a time when you had the wisdom, but, didn't understand until later, journal about it. Retrospectively, what would have helped your understanding at the time?
If you are grappling to understand some wisdom that you've recently acquired (or that the Spirit has put on your heart recently), write about the "wisdom". Ask the Spirit to guide your hand as you journal, and help you with getting understanding.
Happy Journalling!

Last night, as I was working on a new product during my daughter's very late nap, I was surprised to hear the bump-bump of little footsteps on the stairs. I turned to look at the stairs, to see who was visiting me, only to find my daughter sleepily wandering towards me.
I'm still not convinced that she was awake as she came down the stairs, turned the corner, and headed into my room. But, somehow she managed to find me with her little groggy eyes. She quietly climbed up onto my lap as I laid aside what I had been working on, and welcomed her into my arms.
Not a word was said as she turned and snuggled into me. I wrapped my arms around her, repositioned myself in my chair, and gave myself over to that very precious moment. Within seconds, she was snoring - sleeping deeply in the comfort of her mommy's arms.
And, while I was sitting there, with my beautiful daughter snuggled in my arms, I thanked God for sending her my way right then.

"The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You will sustain him on his sickbed."
~Psalm 41:3 (NKJV)
Have you had a time in your life when you've been very ill? Maybe you've experienced serious illness through witnessing a loved one's illness.
No matter your experience - whether personal or second hand, consider today's scripture. The Lord will strengthen those in need - whether it's on the bed of illness, or other times. He will sustain you.
Consider, in your journal, a time when the Lord strengthened you when you were in need (whether it was a time of physical illness, emotional illness - such as depression or heart break - or another time of need), and how He sustained you - lifting you up and carrying you through that time.
What was the situation? How did the Spirit strengthen you, how did His hand sustain you?
While writing, consider this a message to those who will come after you - a message of hope and promise in the face of dark circumstance.

"I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me."
~Psalm 3:5 (NKJV)
Have you ever been in the middle of a turbulent storm in your life, and had a peaceful nights' sleep - as if by miracle - giving you rest when you needed it most?
If you have, take some time in your journal to think about how that helped you face the turbulence. When you awoke, feeling refreshed, did the entire situation look or feel like it was going to be okay?
If you haven't, please consider how the rest that the Lord gives us - particularly in times of trouble - is yet another way that He sustains us. Not only does He carry us through the worst of times, but, He also gives us rest - if we allow Him to.
Take a few more minutes in your journal and consider this scripture further. What else does it say to you? How is this part of the Living Word speaking to you?
Happy Journalling!
