Horace was in advertising when he met Otto Stern, a mail-order plant entrepreneur. The plants ended up in poor condition from transportation, so they found someone to develop a water soluble fertilizer. Horace's wife named it Miracle Gro.
Their first ad in 1951 capitalized on America's post-war infatuation with science and focused on laboratory tests and amazing results. His advertising was sensual, scientific with tests, and personal through testimonials.
So the basic three things Horace did to succeed were:

Inc's April 2005 issue had a great little article with a picture that pretty much told it all...it is about the coming of the microchip in everyday products, and how it will affect life as we know it.
Inc came up with the following new-fangled products and brainstorming ideas for products with chips in them...
Beer mug that alerts the bartender of an empty glass.
Credit cards that track spending and prevent fraud.
Baseballs that track speed.
Children's books that talk.
Tire valves that monitor pressure.
Globes that tell you geographical info.
Clothes that help keep inventory accurate.
Coffe Cups that warn of too hot or too cold temperature.
Video chip on golf bags to record your swing.
So I am going to have a contest for my listeners and readers. Submit your ideas for "chip" products in the comment section for this article or via phone at 214-231-2911 x. 4508. Describe the product's appearance and usage, and I'll list them next week. Then you get to vote on the best "chip off the old block"...I know, that was bad.
But best chip idea will win $25 sent to their paypal account.
I'm looking forward to checking out your ideas...let's see how well YOU brainstorm!
Today's inspirational podcast is about worry. Corrie Ten Boom, at the end of her life, stated that, "Worry does not empty tomorrow of it's sadness; it empties today of it's strength." Another woman worried for decades she would die of cancer, only to die of pneumonia...so she wasted 30 years worrying about the wrong thing!
In this week's issue, I share my own personal trick to escaping the snare of worry - so maybe it will help you, too...listen to how I was broken of the habit!
Steve Webb, the Podcaster for Lifespring, is absolutely fantastic. He is the host of Lifespring!, the first Christian podcast not based on church sermons. A husband and father of three sons, Steve felt called by God to do this podcast in October of 2004.
I met Steve when he listed his podcast on FamilyFriendlyPodcasts.com, our "professional and safe" podcast directory. He has been generous enough to share a show with us, so enjoy!
Lifespring! is where you can hear about the One who loves you unconditionally and who gave His life for you...Jesus Christ. Music, conversation, and reasons to believe. Presented in a conversational manner, there will be very few sermons here...excerpts at most.

Today we are talking about a case study found in Inc's April 2005 Issue where an inventor has the opportunity (and crossroads decision) of a lifetime.
Lance Fried has created the world's first waterproof MP3 player - nirvana for surfers, skiiers, swimmers, kayakers and other damp dwellers. He used his own funds and volunteering from his friends to make it happen, and when several "big box" retailers, like Best Buy and Bass Sporting Goods, found out about it, they wanted it on their shelves.
Sounds like a dream come true for Fried, right? Well.....
if lance reads this i have an idea that could expand his idea even further, sure it's been thought of, but nobody has made it yet, contact me 303 238 2236 or bdmaas@comcast.net i think we could do it well.
A lecturer was giving a lecture to his students on stress management. He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, "How heavy do you think this glass of water is?" The students' answers ranged from 20g to 500g. "It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance. It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."
"If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier."
"What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again."
We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on. So before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burden you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can. Pick it up again later when you have rested...
Rest and relax. Life is short, enjoy it!!

So the point is, you find people of integrity, people who have good skills, and people who are so good at what they do that you can allow them to do what they do. They know the vision so well, and they know you so well, that they accomplish what you would accomplish.
Ruiz says that another piece of advice he received at Texas Instruments was that the worst thing that could happen to him if he made a poor decision was that he would be fired. But the way it was presented to him, he realized that getting fired would not be the end of the world, and that he shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes.
BRAIN STORM!
Learning to trust your employees is a huge leap of faith sometimes. Yet, to move from small business owner or solopreneur, whose income is often limited to the number of hours in a day, to big business owner, whose income is unlimited because of the increasing staff he or she commands, there has to be a definite amount of trust invested in the employees or partners.
Have you searched out staff members who truly fit your company's mold? Do they have the same basic character and quality as you, so they can represent you even when you are not around?
Have you spent sufficient time with your staff so that they know you well enough to represent you? Could you have a meal together, work on a project together, or simply train them on what is most important to you and how you would do things yourself?
Consider creating a document, or even an audio presentation, that tells your staff members about who you are, what you believe, and what is important to you, both personally and professionally. Communication is a key here.
Hiring people who are good at what they do - so good that you don't have to micromanage - can truly relieve a tremendous amount of stress from you. To test their strengths and weaknesses, start them out as a partner with you on a project, checking their progress along the way. You don't have to hand over large projects immediately - let them earn your trust. But once you have trained them and mentored them, let them do what you hired them to do.
FEAR - fear of making a mistake, of failing, of being fired. It can actually squelch good decision making because of the pressure it puts on you. Too often we have tunnel vision, and think that if something bad happens today, that it will ruin our future. But sometimes, honestly, getting fired is the best thing that can happen to you, especially if you are staying there out of fear of the unknown instead of because you love your job. You get pushed out of the nest, and although it's scary, you may find yourself in a place of great satisfaction, possibly even starting your own business. What are you afraid of that makes you pull back from certain decisions? Where are you timid instead of agressive out of fear of failure? At one company we profiled, the people were actually rewarded for finding and admitting the flaws in their plans and products. You learn by mistakes, and good companies will allow such mistakes so that you can make wiser decisions.
Donnie Deutsch, the host of CNBC's The Big Idea, says that if you love something, the money will come. His business was handed to him by his father, and the first time around, Donnie was not ready to take on the responsibility. He was young and partying, and he didn't like what he was doing. Basically, his father said, "Get out of here - you don't love what you do. I DO love what I do." [Read More!]
ASPENBLOOMWELLPET "Where Seeing Your Pets Good Health Bloom Is What We're All About!" Kim Bloomer -Publisher and Preventative Pet Care Consultant
Jill and Bella -poppy princesses!
Hello
fellow pet lovers! This is an extra "column" this week as tomorrow I'll
continue on with ailments in our pets. I just wanted to do this extra
post as a tribute to my friend Jill Moss and our angel dog Bella. This
is more than about just losing a pet to veterinary negligence or a
superbug -MRSA. This is about dealing with the loss of a special friend
and companion. Most of us animal lovers have been blessed to have at
least one special furr companion in our lives. When they are wrenched
away from us so unexpectedly we deal with loss and grief just as though
we'd lost a human friend or family member. Many might call us
ridiculous or eccentric, but we know differently, don't we?
From
the long conversation last Friday evening I had with Jill, I learned
much about the depth and breadth of their special relationship and
bond. It's evident in every single photo you see of the two together. I
had just the same with my former dog Fridge, my beautiful golden boy.
The
loss of Fridge was so devastating for me and yet I knew he was dying.
He was old and sick and I knew he had to be put down. From what I know
now, it didn't have to be this way for him had I given him natural care
for his life, not vaccinated yearly, fed him raw food, and used natural
modalities to help him. Had I done so I believe he would've lived much
longer and much more of a quality life. Hindsight is always 20/20.
From
that and from what I went through with Shadrach's mainstream medicine
nightmare, I felt compelled to learn and then share with others so that
pet owners would not have to suffer what I did. Now that I've met Jill
and know her story about Bella, I know I went through what I did in
order to be able to help others NOT have to go through the same thing
and also to be able to emphathize and console others who find
themselves in the same situation.
I am glad that I decided to
share my loss rather than hide away in sorrow, pain and loss. To me it
was a positive way to deal with the loss. "Regular" folks think I'm
nuts, but we furr loving folks know better. We know how much our
furrkind mean to us in our lives. We know they are much more than pets.
They are our friends, companions, confidantes, muses, supporters,
allies, protectors and comedians. When we lose them -suddenly or in the
normal course of life -we suffer their loss greatly.
I hope many
of you will write me here (use the little QMTP box at the top of the
channel) and share your stories with me. I'll answer you promptly and
tell you how you can send me your photos too. Also, please go visit the
Bella Moss Foundation and drop Jill a line as that would greatly encourage her.
Share
with her your stories and remember what it was like to lose your
special friend. That is what I did and while I did cry a bit, it helped
me to know I encouraged her. Jill intends to bring about much needed
change in the UK and I hope all over the world in veterinary medicine.
I hope you will help her realize this goal and be generous in your
donations.
I've decided that once my special products are
developed for Aspenbloom -products so special that I am not going to
tell you about them yet (grin -handcrafted by a very talented woman and
friend) - I am going to donate a large portion of the proceeds to the
Bella Moss Foundation.
More than just sharing about diseases,
and how to heal, we want to heal the spirit too. That is God's purpose
for me -to share the healing that comes from Him through His Son. So,
along with providing you with the knowledge to care for your pets
preventatively, I also want to start sharing how to heal the entire
animal. That is what holistic is -caring for the entire animal not
treating symptoms and trying to cure the disease. Holistic healing is
treating the animal in its entirety.
Because death is a part
of life, I do want to deal some with the loss of our pets and how even
that, can be part of our own healing. Rather than tell someone to just
go out and get another pet, we can respect that our pets are more than
just pets to those of us who have been gifted with an affinity with and
for them. That is part of the stewardship God handed down to us during
creation. To not blatantly disregard what a life means.
God
knows that. He gave us His only Son but prior, it was very serious on
His part to take the lives of animals to cover us and our
transgressions. Every life on this earth has a purpose and is here for
a reason and that should never be taken lightly.

Today we start with Rick Warren, who shares some rather shockingly honest perceptions, to Peter Drucker with life changing insights, and the CEO of Jet Blue on the importance - no, the mandaratory necessity - of balancing your family with your work.
I found Rick Warren's advice very interesting and very startling, although I think very accurate. He says that you definitely need mentors and models. Models are "the people you want to emulate." However, he says that the models need to be dead, because some people can start their lives off well, but end up rather tragically. This is not only a huge disappointment later on, but can be quite devestating.
He has sat at the feet of Peter Drucker for a long time, and one of the things that has been drilled into him is: "There is a difference between effectiveness and efficiency. [Read More!]

Kim, I agree. Along with the head of Jet Blue, who has set aside time with his family over everything, I think this commitment makes for mentally, physically and spiritually healthy entrepreneurs, as well as healthy businesses.
Hi Penny,
Now this issue of Brainstorm really got my attention! I always listen to anything Rick Warren says first off, and then you said "holistic"! That is vital and key in anything we do.
While my business is holistic pet care, I find it interesting that trying to balance our my business with my family life and along with rest and recreation, can be tough at times. Then I must go back to God's word and realize what is really important. Also, keeping the focus of my business on it's original intent -that I can say is still evident!
Thank you for this very thought-provoking issue Penny!
