Songwriting Help - Is Music Theory Really Necessary?

I hear a lot of beginning songwriters bemoan the fact that they have little or no musical theory knowledge and therefore will not be able to write 'good' songs.

My answer to that is that songs come from the heart and mind of the songwriter not from some mathematical formulae and besides, if you want to learn music theory it's never too late to learn.

Songwriting Tip - One Song, One Idea

The average length of a song is about three and a half minutes - use it wisely!!

As a judge of songwriting competitions I see and hear this all the time. You are settling into a song and then 'whammo' the whole story changes or yet another subplot has been introduced.

All I ask is 'why?'
