Whoa Nelly, I can't remember who said that but I always found that comment to be a bit over the top until I started doing lots of jamming with other musicians either in general or with the bands that I have been in.

If you really break a song down to it's most basic structure you will find that its just like any type of prose. There is a beginning, a middle and an end.
This article deals with the beginning and the end of a song and how important they are to the song.

Sometimes a change is as good as a holiday
I love bridges, there is something about the way a good bridge can take you to somewhere else in a song and then gently take you back to the familiarity of a verse or chorus that makes it a very important piece of your songwriting armoury.
