Email Insider...The Hudsucker Proxie

EMAILINSIDER...
The Hudsucker Proxie

ONE OF the loopholes in the Can-Spam laws is in the area of identification. The laws require the sender of an e-mail solicitation to identify themselves via postal address in the email body. Anyone who has actually gone to some of these addresses listed in many high volume e-mail addresses (like I have) will soon discover that they are standing in front of the local UPS store and a bank of rented mail boxes. In fact, I would venture to guess that if they passed legislation banning e-mail completely, we’d see UPS’ revenue take a big hit.

Marketing Your Shows the 4 C's Way

by Susan Friedman

Traditional marketing is changing: Customers are more sophisticated and price sensitive. They expect products and services to be delivered faster and more conveniently. And they have no qualms about switching to competitors.

At the same time, traditional marketing tools are less effective than in the past. Products are not much different from each other, pricing is quickly matched by competitors, advertising is expensive and less effective, and sales force costs are rising.

Adam Curry Wants to Make You an iPod Radio Star

He's gone from MTV to MP3, and now he's leading a grassroots rebellion called podcasting. Why amateurs may soon rule the airwaves (begin download now).
by Annalee Newitz

"People think I'm this poseur guy from MTV, but I don't care," says Adam Curry, the former VJ whose long blond locks once mesmerized teenyboppers across the globe. "I've always had this total dual life as a geek and a celebrity." He pauses for a moment and flashes the signature Curry smile. He's trimmed his mane and become an Internet entrepreneur, but he's still got that swoon-inducing grin.

Just An Online Minute....Blogger Protection
from MediaPost

Now here’s something new, at least to the Minute.

There is a Committee to Protect Bloggers. Yes, there is.

It seems the one-month-old group, Committee to Protect Bloggers, was formed by a guy named Curt Hopkins, who decided that bloggers throughout the blogosphere, which he’s described as a “weird no man’s land,” need some form of protection. The group has developed an International Bloggers’ Bill of Rights, a petition designed to protect the free speech of bloggers who are often threatened in their workplaces.

The Pitfalls of the Work From Home Craze

by Tim Somers

More than 4 million people currently have the good fortune of working from home. From major corporations letting their key people set up a home office to the many inspiring home based business owners. Having the ability to set your own hours is the key benefit in choosing to work from home.

Home based businesses are continuing to grow at an incredible rate. The Internet has opened a window of opportunity for business ventures that were once impossible to build in a home office environment. The Small Business Administrations Office of Advocacy claims over 50 percent of all small businesses are home based and will continue to grow.

How To Use Color On The Web To Get More Clients Than You Can Handle

by Michael Port and Beth M. Lyons

You only have one opportunity to make a first impression, and your website is often the first contact you have with a potential client. As a representation of you and your business, it's important to ensure it conveys the right impression.

Color can impact mood and elicit strong emotional reactions, which can play for or against you, so choose your colors thoughtfully. Choose two or three dominant colors, and choose those that represent the qualities of your service or product, or the emotions you hope to elicit, rather than choosing your personal favorites.

Here's a brief overview of the psychology of color to keep in mind when choosing your colors:

Making Up A News Story, Legally

by Paul Hartunian

Most businesses have their 'heroes'. They're the trend-setters who lay the foundation for the rest to follow.

In the publicity business, the real trend-setters are the Press Agents. They're the people who literally 'create' news stories.

They're people like George Evans. His company was hired to take a relatively unknown Vegas lounge singer called Frank Sinatra and try to make him into a star. Evans hired a dozen girls, at $5 each, to jump and scream 'Oh Frankie, Oh Frankie' and toss flowers at the stage. They met and practiced in the basement at the Paramount Casino where Sinatra was performing.

Jack Keller, Evan's West Coast partner explains what happened:

February 22, 2005, 08:55 GMT

Days after the first arrest for instant-messaging spam, an innovative software product has been launched to help counter the menace of 'spim'

Back in December, instant-messaging (IM) management company IMLogic partnered with security companies McAfee and Sybari (recently acquired by Microsoft) to build IMLogic's Threat Center, which aims to protect users from peer-to-peer and IM threats, such as viruses, worms, spim and malicious code. The centre monitors honeypots (servers that attract security threats) on private IM networks run by AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo to identify the latest problems in the IM world. IMLogic was founded by Francis deSouza, who built Microsoft's first IM server.

Learn The Five Key Steps To Getting Free Publicity

by Dianne Beiermann

1) Website Focus: Make sure your site is focused on a
specific category of products. I cannot stress this enough.
The editors will often check to see if your site features
products that are in the same category as your product
press release. This is one of the key ways you can get free
publicity for your products. Because when you send out a
press release on a new product, the editors will check your
site to make sure that you offer similar products. Once
they see that you offer a wide range of products in this
same category, you will greatly improve your chances for
getting free publicity for your products and website.

Husband-and-wife team build a startup into a trailblazer

Her unassuming husband, Ben, just wanted another computer programming gig in Silicon Valley's depressed job market.

Media Contacts Lists and How to Build a Fantastic One

by Paula Gardner

I got the latest issue of Internet Works in the post yesterday and was disappointed to find out that it’s going to be the last. As well as having the good taste to run a feature on me last year (!) Internet Works has been a great source of information and ideas for me for the last couple of years and it’s demise will leave a gap.

But it is also just another reminder that publications come and go, and their staff do too. But, with new publications emerging, and other titles closing, how do you keep up to date with all the PR opportunities out there?

Millions of 'bricks and mortar' businesses have websites, but only a fraction of those businesses are using the Internet to bring in more sales. It's an expense that they pay because 'everyone else is doing it'. Don't settle for that.

THE NEW YORK TIMES CO. announced yesterday that it intends to purchase About.com from magazine company Primedia Inc. for $410 million in cash.

The deal could more than double the online reach of the Times Company, which currently draws 13 million monthly viewers to its 40-plus Web sites, including NYTimes.com and Boston.com. Around 22 million users a month visit About.com, a consumer information site; the acquisition will also give the Times additional advertising inventory.

7 Simple Ways of Driving Traffic To Your Site Using One E-Published Tips Booklet
by Paulette Ensign

I am not a web designer or search engine optimizer, nor do I play one on TV. However, I do know that the driving force in bringing qualified traffic to your web site is dynamic high value content. That means compelling, interesting, approachable, and immediately useful information, especially when you also directly sell products or services at your site. Increasing and maintaining traffic also demands both offline and online mechanisms to attract those visitors.

No Protection for Bloggers

No Protection for Bloggers
by Adam L. Penenberg

Over the past eight months, bloggers have covered two political conventions; claimed credit for forcing the resignations of two prominent journalists (soon-to-be former CBS news anchor Dan Rather, ex-CNN news chief Eason Jordan); outed a conservative faker with a taste for gay porn credentialed to cover the White House; and risen from relative obscurity to media darling. They've done this while attracting impressive levels of web traffic (and advertising dollars) and conjuring up a cottage industry and community devoted largely to, well, themselves.

Now, with two reporters from established news organizations facing jail time for defying an order to divulge confidential sources to a federal grand jury, bloggers are clamoring for the same legal protection that journalists are accorded under the First Amendment.

How Do You Treat Customers In An Online Home Business?

by Alan Cheng

With an online home business, many people wonder what the right way is to treat customers. After all, you can't see their grumpy faces and therefore don't know whether they're happy or annoyed with the purchase.

Let me tell you a secret. In an online home business the ancient rule still applies - 'Treat your customers as if they are your boss for they pay your salary'. Yes, it's just as important on the internet as it is with a normal business.

People DO NOT Buy From Websites......

Copyright © 2004 Mal Keenan

Of course the title of this article IS NOT complete as $1,000,000s on sales are made every day by website owners. What it should have read to be more accurate was "People DO NOT buy from websites....they buy from other people".

For a long time online I believed it was only a matter of putting a website online and that the rest would fall into place. The sales would roll in and if I created the perfect website and sent some targeted visitors consistently then I would be rich. This idea was very far from the whole truth.

Online News Sites Struggle With RSS Challenge
by Gavin O'Malley, Monday, Feb 14, 2005 8:00 AM EST

AS INTERNET USERS DISCOVER CONTENT
aggregation's merit, advertisers and publishers fear a loss of control over their content and how users experience it. Now, several newspapers have launched their own customized RSS readers, in an effort to solidify their relationships with online readers.

In the last several weeks, the Los Angeles Times, Britain's Guardian, and CNET each have acknowledged plans to offer free, branded RSS readers. The Los Angeles Times, part of Tribune Co., and the Guardian, owned by the non-profit Scott Trust, said they were putting their own brands on a reader called NewsPoint. Designed by Swiss-American software firm Consenda, NewsPoint currently is limited to a small trial phase.

What Internet Marketers Can Learn From Obvious Adams

by Jo Han Mok

A very long time ago, 1916 to be exact, The Saturday Evening Post began publishing a column about a young man named “Obvious Adams”. Adams was a fictional caricature of a would-be advertising man who was so simple, and so guileless, in his thinking that he was brilliant in spite of himself.

The column gained popularity in business circles for its plain wisdom and straightforward advice. The Adams narrative wasn’t merely a “good story”, it was a source of actionable information. Each installment found young Adams facing a new marketing challenge bestowed upon him by his employer. His knack for finding the solutions which hid in plain site earned him his namesake.

I am a super-fan of Google. I am also a fan of studying success so that I can learn from it. Here are a few key points that you, as a home based business entrepreneur, can learn from Google:

1) Capital Isn't Everything

Radio to the MP3 degree: Podcasting
By Byron Acohido, USA TODAY

Big tech and media companies could not have foreseen this potentially disruptive hitch to their grand strategies.

But consider how easily a 20-year-old Briton, Michael Rundle, tapped into the raw power of podcasting.

The Cambridge University history student on Jan. 24 began hosting a 40-minute audio program - a podcast, or online radio program - in which he introduces original songs performed by British musicians, including himself. Rundle didn't need the BBC or any PR firm to help him reach an audience. He simply posted his show on the Internet.

by Sharon Housley

General web statistics give pertinent information about website visitors. Webmasters analyzing these statistics have a better understanding of who their website visitors are and how they perceive the website. A lot can be learned by evaluating navigation patterns, most-viewed pages and exit pages. Deciphering web logs could easily become a full-time job. The information that can be gleaned from close log scrutiny is extremely valuable.

How RSS Advertising Can Help Business Gain A Higher ROI
By Hong Brandon

I recently read the case study conducted by Pheedo, an advertising company on the use of RSS Feeds advertising versus email advertising.

Surprised? Let's investigate the benefits of RSS advertising versus email ads.

RSS advertising has a number of 'superior' advantages compared to email ads:

The Ten Commandments To Creating Amazing Audio Products
By John Kiel

1.Thou shall create audio products as the fastest way to come out with a product.

Forget about e-books. They take to long to create especially if you’re a slooooow typist. You can create an audio product in a day instead of weeks or months with an e-book. If you must create an e-book, do the audio first and have someone transcribe the audio into a word file. You than clean it up and add some chapter heads and an index and Bam! You have an instant e-book.

Building niche sites is all the rage these days.

The basic strategy is very simple. Find a niche market that isn't oversaturated. Develop a list of related keywords people are searching on. Then write an article optimized for each one of your keywords. Once you have your articles, upload them to your site. Monitize your site with affiliate links and Adsense.

RSS feeds attract venture dollars

By Paul Festa
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

So many blogs, so little time--and now, so many entrepreneurs hoping to help you sort through them.

Business Card CD & also Your Own Recording Line...

Thursday, February 03, 2005

Hello Online Marketers! Yes, I said Business Card CD! I got mine and they are da bomb, let me tell you! I was thinking a CD for a business card...hmm might be kind of big, lol!
Nope these are way cool because they are only slightly larger than a standard business card. They look like a business card with all your traditional information:
Logo, photo, graphics, slogan, email address, URLs, etc. The big difference is that these can be popped into your desktop or laptop and LISTENED TO! I got mine, sat down and listened to it and I wanted to hire myself, LOL!

Truly though these are the only business cards I'll be ordering from now on. Penny Haynes, the CEO of Encouraging Entertainment does these cards and she included background music and editing for me on mine. It sounds so professional and think about it - you'll stand out just for having a business card that actually TALKS! You can showcase your expertise, include an ebook, include ereports, showcase your industry, whatever! These are a MUST HAVE. So read on to see how you can get yours. Penny is NOT paying me, I don't have an affiliate deal in this, I just thought this would be a great promotional tool to offer you...Just listen in to my testimonial here http://tinyurl.com/6jj9x
