Are You Making This Marketing Mistake?

by Kathleen Gage

Recently, I facilitated a workshop on how to market a business. I asked participants “who is your market?” Many responded with, “Everyone!” I’ve got news for you, not everyone is your market. If this is your thinking you are headed for trouble – double time. No business can be all things to all people. You will do better to think in terms of expanding your ability to reach specific customers and satisfy their particular needs.

How do you personally define success? High income? Substantial net worth? A fine home? Peer recognition?

On a personal basis, there are likely almost as many definitions of success as there are people in the world.

In marketing, though, there are just four measurable elements of success:

The power in this lies in the fact that affiliate programs have given us easy access to a huge variety of products and services that we can present to potential buyers, opening up an endless number of possibilities.

Featured Weekly Interview

Wednesday, January 26, 2005
Wow, hello Internet Marketers! I did forget to post this week's interview didn't I? Well, Cathy and I are in the process of putting together a series of classes to teach the A to Z on how to publish here on Quikonnex. PLUS I'm a partner in classes on preventative pet care, AND I'm teaching the class you've seen posted here "Holistic Care for the Whole Woman". So, I apologize for not having the weekly interview. It may be changing to a weekly industry profile. We'll see how many step to the plate to do the work for this.

My friend and creator of the flower essence blend, Receiving Kindness (exclusive to my business Aspenbloom) is our guest this week. Nancy is quite an accomplished business woman who came from a successful corporate America job to start a successful business. Enjoy!

KB: Hello Nancy! To set the stage for this interview, would you please tell us a bit about yourself?

NB: First of all, I could say a lot of things about myself, but what might be important for others to know is that I am someone who has been through a lot in life, and emerged stronger -- more caring, thoughtful, and resourceful.

As a person committed to service, I find ways to use who I am and what I do that will help people and their pets. My work is an important part of my life, and I love it. I love making things better.

KB: Yes you do and I can attest to that personally! Okay, give us your elevator speech, or 30-second spiel, about what you do, about your businesses.

Are You Marketing and Selling What People Buy?

by Charlie Cook

Do you ever wonder if you’re speaking a different language than your prospects? You may have recently launched a business, designed an innovative process or purchased state of the art equipment that leaves the competition in the dust, but no matter what you say or do, you aren't attracting as many prospects as you need. Lauren called me from Michigan with just such a concern. She and another friend had opened a fitness salon about a year ago. After a careful analysis of the local chain's facilities, they had invested in next-generation equipment that provided many added features. Yet, a year after opening, and doing every marketing activity they could think of, they still weren't attracting enough clients to pay the rent.

How Can RSS Feeds Help Your Online Business?
By Hong Brandon

So who should I use RSS Feeds? How can it help with my online business?

1. RSS Feeds allow you to deliver your newsletter/message directly to the desktop of your subscribers and readers, BYPASSING email. As you might have read or heard, email is not getting through to a lot of people, especially now with CAN SPAM law in place, ISPs are filtering a lot of emails with certain subject lines in them.

Like It or Not, Blogs Have Legs

By Adam L. Penenberg

I detest the word "blog." It sounds like the noise a bulimic makes after a hearty meal.

Unfortunately, this faux onomatopoeia has done more to undermine blogs, blogging and the so-called blogosphere than a thousand maladroit Columbia Journalism Review articles.

The new hot commodity is a blog for your small business so you've decided you must have one.

Before you begin think about it long term. Where do you think the blog is headed? What is the objective? Do you want it to be found by the search engines for specific terms? How often will you post? Who will the audience be? What will it look like a year from now? Five years from now?

How to Get Started Blogging in 5 Minutes or Less
By Linda J Bruton

I put off starting a blog for a long time because I thought it would be hard. I thought it would be technical. I thought I'd have to install scripts and tear my hair out getting them to work. At that point, most of what I'd read about blogs and RSS was just so much geek-speak.

Was I ever wrong!

To Blog or Not to Blog: Are Blogs Becoming More Popular than Forums, Newsletters and E-zines?
By Vishal P. Rao

Blogging is hot, and seems to be becoming hotter each month. Although blogging originally was dismissed, by many successful publishers and other online "gurus", the truth is that now, a few years after the "blogging trend" began, there are actually more blogs and more bloggers online than ever before. Blogging, obviously, is "here to stay"!

Weekly Interview with Brande Bradford

Sunday, January 16, 2005
Hello Online Marketers! This week's interview is with Brande Bradford - our "go to" person for insurance! Brande has some great business advice for you so please read on!

KB: Brande thank you for taking the time to participate in this interview for our readers.
To set the stage for this interview, would you please tell us a bit about yourself?

BB: I currently live in Atlanta, GA, but will always be a true country girl from Kansas. Believe it or not, I met my husband Chris online in a business chat room about 5 years ago. After commuting for 2 years we decided that someone had to budge, so I moved here with my 3 girls: Amanda 16, Megan 15, Jennifer 12. Then we were all blessed with the addition of Markus who is 3.

As far as business goes, until 1998 was a typical "work outside the home mom". After the loss of my mother, I decided that I needed to work from home, and one day never went back. Everything that I have been involved with had been online. Mostly dealing with helping people market their business. About a year and half ago, I decided that I needed a little more and entered the health insurance arena. Yes, its another "work out of the home" business, but I am my own boss. I work when I want to work, and I still have control, that is what is important. More importantly than control, I am very passionate about helping others.

KB: Wow, what a hard thing to have to go through Brande. It sure did give you the fuel to make a go of a business from home though, didn't it!
Okay Brande, give us your elevator speech, or 30-second spiel, about what you do, about your business:

What is the orange "XML" or "RSS" icon I see more and more on web sites?
By Anne-Marie Killer

This question does not have a one sentence answer! If I just said that one uses this icon to get a site's RSS feed, you still won't understand. So let's try and answer you in such a way that it all makes sense to you and, more importantly, that you learn how to benefit from it.

Let's say that you like my web site very much and you would like to read new content as I add it. At this stage there is no way of informing you when I've added a new page except for notifying you by email. This assumes that you've provided me with your e-mail address - which most people are hesitant to do any way. The other way is for you to bookmark my site - but how many times do people really go back to a site?

Internet Marketing - High Tech Direct

by Mal Keenan

Almost everyone has received unsolicited offers in the mail. These are what many call "junk mail", and more often than not, end up in the "circular file", more commonly known as the trash can. But anyone who is considering Internet marketing as either a part-time or full-time business may want to at least give a moment's pause before the big toss. Better still would be to study and reflect on the material you've received, and in some cases, store it in a real file for future use. The reason is because Internet marketing today is, in reality and when done properly, a high-tech enhancement and expansion of old-fashioned direct mail.

Why advertising, marketing and PR pros should blog

Why advertising, marketing and PR pros should blog

LONDON - Blogs are a cheap, convenient and enjoyable form of PR and marketing that should be part of every business plan in 2005, writes Bob Cargill, senior creative director of Yellowfin Direct Marketing.

Most advertising, marketing and public relations professionals know a blog when they see one, but when it comes to actually using this relatively new, self-publishing platform, there are still many sceptics and naysayers among us. This time next year, however, those people will likely have come to their senses. In 2005, I dare say you would have to be either misinformed or just plain obstinate to not at least consider adding a blog to your business plan. Here are 10 reasons why: Blogs are interactive

6 Ways That Blogging Can Save You Money
By Tinu AbayomiPaul

Even though I’ve had several personal blogs for years, I’ve only been officially business blogging since 2003. So in going back over expenses for the last quarter, you can imagine my shock when I realized that my overall business costs were down about 19%. What saved me so much money? Surprisingly, blogging.

Powerful Considerations Before Starting Your Own Business

by Gobala Krishnan

What does it take to start your own business? To many, the thought of starting your own business may be too daunting that you give up before you even start. Let's analyze what a typical start-up needs:

Start-up Capital

There is no secret that money talks the loudest of all. As a future entrepreneur, you may well know the fact that capital is perhaps the most essential part of setting up a business, both online and offline. Lack of start-up capital not only puts your business at a disadvantage, it also makes cash flow a serious issue. Over time, it also makes it difficult for you to expand your business.

It's Not Brain Surgery, It's Just An Online Home Based Business

by Kirk Bannerman

Back when I first started my online home business I didn't have a clue concerning how to go about it. I had never done any Internet marketing, and didn't know anything about websites or search engines or any of that other online business stuff...in short, I was a complete rookie. In retrospect, the two major things that really helped me was that I refused to be intimidated and I kept a realistic perspective (both in terms of initial financial results and the time frame necessary to become successful). I know from my own years of experience that relatively few business ventures are started on the Internet by people with the experience, motivation, determination, backing, and support that it takes to even have a reasonable chance of success.

Staff Writer, CNET News.com

MSN on Tuesday evening is expected to quietly begin testing new features for searching and syndicating blogs, in a nod to the online publishing format.

In partnership with Moreover Technologies, Microsoft's Internet division will add features to MyMSN, its personalized Web service, that will let users find blogs and syndicate content using the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) format, according to company representatives.

How To Turn Freebies Into Sales

by Rudy Cline

You can increase sales and profits by offering freebies to people who buy your main product or service. They increase the over all value of your main offer and in return people feel they're getting more for less.

It's important that you have a high enough profit margin so you can afford to give them away. Some freebies can be created without a lot of expense; like electronic information products. With these type of freebies there's no shipping or physical material costs.

It’s Really An Accountability Issue

by John Jantsch

You’ve studied, you’ve learned, you’ve got a game plan and you’re well intentioned. So why is it that you still don’t seem to get around to executing the marketing plan?

The phone rings, the copier jambs, the fantasy football stats need updating . . . see, the problem with marketing plans in general is that, left alone, they don’t create marketing results.

Now, I’m a big fan of marketing plans. This time of year you should pull out a big giant piece of paper, sit down with your staff and map out a month-by-month strategy for your marketing activities. (See calendar tool above)

The Tsunami and the Net: Global Awareness, Global Response
The web not only gave us real-time news of the gigantic waves' destruction, but also pushed us to help the survivors.

By David Kirkpatrick

The terrible Asian tsunami, and its aftermath, has been rightly called the first truly global tragedy. One reason is that citizens of so many different countries were killed, injured or left destitute. The other reason is that the Internet's globe-spanning power made it possible for news accounts, pictures, and videos of the devastating natural disaster to be quickly transmitted around the world. Barely a day after many of us in the U.S. opened Christmas presents, we were jarred out of our complacency to see and hear about tremendous suffering halfway around the globe.

An Ethical Dilemma? Selling Something That You Can Get For Free

by Willie Crawford

At least once a week, I have someone point out to me that a big-name information marketer, software "developer," or company, is selling something that is very similar to a product that you can get for free. They see something fundamentally "wrong" with SELLING a product or information that can be obtained for nothing... if you search in the right place. Often, they point this out to me because they just feel the need to protest something they view as somehow "wrong."

Press Releases for Every Occasion

by Bill Stoller

To many marketers, the press release is something of a "one size fits all" proposition. You want to get media coverage, you knock out a press release, send it to some journalists and sit back and wait.

Of course, smart Publicity Insiders already know that’s a prescription for failure. You know that your press release has to have a "hook", be well-written and sent to appropriate journalists in an active, not passive, manner. But there’s another part of the puzzle that even savvy publicity-seekers sometimes miss -- you can’t just write "a press release", you have to write the right kind of press release.

Internet Marketing for Online Businesses

Internet Marketing for Online Businesses

by Brent Yorzinski

Few distinctions are ever made between Internet marketing for an online business and that of a brick and mortar one. While often overlooked, this is one of the most important determinations a website owner needs to consider. But why is this so critical?

When marketing for an online business, it makes little difference where the customer is located. It does not matter if the person purchasing your product is located three miles away or across the country. Regardless, you are going to package and ship the product.

On the other hand, if you are marketing a brick and mortar business online there is a specific geographic area that needs to be targeted. A plumber in Virginia Beach has no need to advertise to someone in California. Still businesses wastefully and wrongly try to conquer the world.

The 'Secret' Revealed

by David Holmes

You work long hours everyday and sometimes feel like you've accomplished nothing. It can be as thankless as doing the dishes. Your website is free for everyone, but it's not free to you.

There are people that for whatever reason will see what you're selling, by pass your link and go straight to the company. They just hate to see you make a profit off a sale to them. It doesn't save them money or anything, they just don't want to be a source for your income. This happens more than others think, and there's nothing you can do about it. For $87 you know of at least 18 'gurus' who will solve this problem for you, but logic makes you hang on to your money. Scams are very where.

Running Your Online Business

by Jeremy Gislason

I had a very nice conversation with one of our members a while ago regarding her business. She has been in business for 11 years with her current company, which is a traditional business started long before the Internet came around.

She has been successful for those 11 years and is still doing very well. She started her online business several months ago with the same products as her traditional business. The problem was her online business was only costing her money and to date she has made no sales, but has spent over $1,500 in advertising and marketing--just for the online side of her business alone.

Here is a news flash. Business is Business! I do not care whether you are on the Internet or in a shopping mall. The same basic principles apply to both businesses.

What's The Difference Between Marketing And Advertising?

What's The Difference Between Marketing And Advertising?

by Marketing Basics

Many people confuse marketing with advertising or vice versa. While both components are equally important, they are also very different. Knowing the differences between the two can put your company on the fast track to success. Let's start off by reviewing the formal definitions of each and then we'll explain how marketing and advertising differ from one another:

Advertising: The paid, public, non-personal announcement of a persuasive message by an identified sponsor; the non- personal presentation or promotion by a firm of its products to its existing and potential customers.

Marketing: The systematic planning, implementation and control of a mix of business activities intended to bring together buyers and sellers for the mutually advantageous exchange or transfer of products.

After reading both of the definitions, it is easy to understand how the differences can be confusing to the point that most people think of them as one and the same. So, lets clear up the confusion.

RSS: A "Really Simple Solution" For Sending And Receiving Content

by Marketing Basics

"RSS" stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is a standard for publishing regular updates to web-based content. Using this standard, web publishers provide updates, such as the latest news headlines or weblog postings. Consumers use RSS reader applications, or one of a growing number of online services to collect and monitor their favorite feeds in one place. RSS content from a publisher, viewed in one of these readers, is often called a "feed."

For consumers, RSS makes it possible to review a large number of sites in a short amount of time.

The Only Option is to Succeed

by Kathleen Gage

With the end of the year fast approaching, now is a great time to take stock of 2004. It is likely that your company set specific goals at the beginning of the year. As you review the past year, the question that must be asked is, "Have I achieved my goals? Has my company achieved the outcomes we set?" If your answer is yes, congratulations! If not, what stopped you?

There are always unplanned occurrences that prevent us from accomplishing all the goals we set. However, our roadblocks are often as simple as getting caught up in the day to day activities of running our business.

Without constant reminders of our vision and goals, they probably won’t materialize. It’s as simple as that.

Finding Your Niche

by W T Abernathy

well bravo for you! But before you begin, there are a few things you should know before strutting down the yellow brick road.

Rule #1 - Know your product. It seems like a simple enough statement, but there's so much to consider. You must be an expert at whatever product or service you're offering to your customers. For myself, it's original comic art. I have spent years researching and following tastes and trends in the industry. I can look at a piece of art and not only tell you what it's market price is, but how it would sell at different times of the year. Having a grasp of your services works the same way.

Blogs And Your Work From Home Internet Business
By Tom Worsley

As a work from home internet business entrepreneur you have several really good tools on the internet you can take advantage of in order to build your work from home business. A blog is just one of those tools that you can use and should be taking advantage of.

In recent months blogs have become more and more popular all over the internet. A blog, or weblog, is a personal Web site updated frequently with links, commentary and anything else you like. People maintained blogs long before the term was coined, but the trend gained momentum with the introduction of automated published systems, most notably Blogger. ( http://www.blogger.com ) At blogger.com Thousands of people use services such as Blogger to simplify and accelerate the publishing process. This makes it very simple to create several 100 pages within a site all with the same look and feel but with different content. This of coarse is exactly what the major search engines are looking for.

7 Pitfalls of Using Email to Sell

7 Pitfalls of Using Email to Sell

by Ari Galper

* Are you sending e-mails to prospects instead of calling them?

* Is e-mail your selling medium of choice because it lets you avoid the rejection that you dread when you make real cold calls?

* Do you wait and wait for return e-mails from prospects that will give you the green light to move the sales process forward?

Sad but true, these days most people who sell for a living spend 80% of their time trying to communicate with prospects via e-mail instead of actually picking up the phone and speaking with them. Are you one of those people? If so, you aren't alone...but do you understand why you've turned to e-mail instead of personal contact? I think there are 2 core reasons that underlie this unfortunate trend:

* Fear of rejection. The sheer negative force of anticipating rejection makes people turn to e-mail to generate new prospect relationships because it hurts less to not get a reply than to hear that verbal "no."

Building Backlinks With Blogs
By Russell Savige

The most boring part of getting traffic to a website is getting backlinks. This is hard, boring, time consuming work. You spend hours finding relevant websites to link to, then spend hours more sending emails requesting backlinks, or submitting your sites to there links pages. And at the end of the day (actually in a few weeks), you have ½ a dozen new reciprocal link partners. that's good and all, but it bores the living hell out of me, and I don't have time for it. And they are only reciprocal links.

One-way links

Just An Online Minute....
from MediaPost

Welcome to 2005, three days in.

We are still processing last year's trends, blogging being one. Blogs surely entered the mainstream in 2004, a trend spurred in part by presidential politics, according to a new study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project. The Pew study notes that 27 percent of Internet users say they read blogs in November, versus 17 percent in a survey conducted in February. News events, high-profile court cases, and major catastrophes like the tsunami in South Asia also drive awareness of blogging and blog readership.

Why It Took Me So Long To Blog

Wednesday, January 05, 2005
Why It Took Me So Long To Blog
By Linda J Bruton

When I saw my first blog, I wasn't impressed.

The first blogs I ever read were embarrassing tales of teenage angst better left private, political diatribes from both the rabid right and the rabid left, and jargon-filled tech rags that made my eyes glaze over

And yet everyone was talking about blogs and that I would soon be left behind if I didn't have one. But they never gave me a simple explanation of how it would benefit me. They talked about RSS - you know, the obligatory "real simple syndication" - followed by a long, boring, techie article filled with jargon that wasn't simple at all. They talked about syndicating my site, but not how that would benefit my business.

No one ever told me, "Hey, fool, listen up! How would you like a 3 or 4 line text link to your site on thousands of other sites getting you tons of traffic and backlinks up the ying-yang on all the SE's?"

If they had, trust me. I'd have been blogging my heart out!

Report: Big boost for blogs in 2004

By Martin LaMonica
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

The number of blogs and the use of blog readers rose rapidly last year--but a majority of Americans still do not know what a blog is.

A report by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, called the "State of Blogging," discovered that readership of Web blogs--essentially, Web-based diaries--spiked 58 percent last year, with 27 percent of Internet users, or 32 million people, saying that they read blogs. Twelve percent of people who read blogs also chose to post comments on them.

New Year's Planning Critical Success Factors
By Paul Lemberg

New Year's is a good time for strategic planning or re-planning your business. But don't think that's the only time. If you feel the need to re-consider your strategic plan - by all means - go ahead.

Whatever time of the year it is, you have probably set a working direction for the rest of the year, including clear-cut objectives. Your first-iteration plan to reach them should be in place. This now (whatever time it is - if you are thinking about it) seems like an ideal time to rethink the whole thing, doesn't it? In our sped-up 21st century world, plans are subject to change just as soon as - or perhaps even before - they are written.

Spam Isn't Canned: Commercial Email Fails To Comply, Spam Rises

On average, only 3 percent of unsolicited commercial email complied with the federal anti-spam law during 2004, according to a report released Monday by MX Logic. The report, which comes one year after the so-called CAN-SPAM Act went into effect, also shows that the overall volume of spam actually rose in 2004, accounting for 77 percent of all email traffic, or one in 1.3 email messages detected through MX Logic's Threat Center during the year. According to MX Logic's analysis of a random sampling of 10,000 unsolicited commercial emails during each week of 2004, monthly CAN-SPAM compliance ranged from a low of 0.54 percent in July to a high of 7.0 percent in December.

A Major Temptation When Developing A Home-Based Business

A Major Temptation When Developing A Home-Based Business

by Kirk Bannerman

From what I have seen and experienced, to quit is the greatest temptation during the first year of working at a home-based business. If smoking was like working at a home-based business, the occurence of lung cancer would be dramatically reduced. It is a known fact that a majority of the people that undertake a work at home business do not achieve real success. There are several reasons for this, but one of the primary reasons is that these people get frustrated and do not allow themselves enough time to succeed.

In the early going, one of the most difficult things about developing a new home based business is dealing with the emotional roller coaster that can result from the highs (successes) and lows (temporary setbacks) you are almost certain to experience. Once you have done the research and decided on a particular home based business opportunity, you really need to focus on persistence and realize that any real business will not just automatically become successful in a matter of days or weeks. You should be prepared to give it your best sustained effort for at least 6 to 12 months in order to begin to build a solid business base and begin to see some good income.

Though I've only lived in Texas and Washington, DC, I'm a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team thanks to my dad's influence. He grew up in Brooklyn and still has family around New York.

KB: Are they the
Brooklyn Dodgers again Meryl? Tells you how much I keep up with baseball these days. My hubby is a bonafide NY Yankee fan! Big age range in your children, you are an amazing woman Meryl!

Okay, give us your elevator speech, or 30-second spiel, about what you do, about your business:

ME: lol – no, the Dodgers are still in L.A. I’m the youngest of three with my nearest sibling being 10 years older so it was natural for me to spread out the kids.

Alrighty Kim, my little speech: I do anything and everything content. My writing style is flexible based on my clients' "business personality." However, it's important to consider what's in it for their customers. With me, you get the work on time, the typical Texas-friendly personality, dependable correspondence, and honesty.

KB: How long have you been in business for yourself? [Read More!]

That's why I tell you if that prospect eludes your entire marketing strategy, you must hold yourself responsible. Excuses are not allowed.

The general trend is to give preference to sales instead of communication with the subscriber base. Perhaps the first few issues are well balanced and in favor of the reader. However, as time goes by, the universal tendency is to disregard the needs of the reader.

The Newsletters I'm talking about are very easy to spot: they'll devote a single paragraph to the reader and immediately insert a product hyperlink. It's gotten so bad, I've received Newsletters with a multitude of stingy 3 or 4 line paragraphs, each leading to a sales link!
