A HISTORY & COSTUMING FOR HALLOWEEN!
by Patricia F. Doering, Editor, Second Hand News

Did you realize that Halloween is second only to Christmas in popularity? And that it had its roots more than 2500 years ago when the Celts, a northern England cult, celebrated the end of each harvest with a huge feast and celebration? Originally more like Thanksgiving, the Celts dressed in elaborate costumes and celebrated the departure of local souls. Later, after Christianity spread throughout that area, this festival which occurred on Nov. 1 became known as "All Hallows Day" and the evening before celebration became known as "All Hallows Eve," which was eventually shortened to "Halloween."

How To Rescue A Sinking Conversation - 7 Great Tips
by Peter Murphy

When a conversation is not working out there is the potential for massive frustration or a breakthrough depending on how you look at it.

However with a little skill you can often turn things around. Here are seven tips to help you.

1 Question Your Assumptions About The Other Person

Perhaps the breakdown in communication is based on rumors that have no basis in reality. You may be unfairly judging the other person and filtering every word he speaks because of a false image of who he really is.

Have you ever harshly judged someone and found out later you were completely in the wrong? Make sure you are not making the same mistake again.

A Guide to Second Hand Shopping

A GUIDE TO SECOND HAND SHOPPING
by Patricia F. Doering, Editor, Second Hand News

I drive a second hand car, wear second hand clothes, read second hand books and watch second hand movies on a second hand TV. set. Everywhere I go, I see second hand furniture, second hand rugs, second hand jewelry, second hand utensils and second hand treasures -- the latter passed on and on from one generation to another. Even one of my cats is second hand!

How many people do you know who have never visited a garage sale, thrift shop or an estate sale? And when buying thrift store clothing in the fifties was frowned upon (who would want to wear someone else's clothing?!), today it's the chic thing to do. Not only is garage sale, estate sale, rummage sale and thrift store buying the in thing to do, it's the best possible way to find treasures and save tons of money at the same time. Where else can you find name label clothing such as Donna Karan, Liz Claiborne, Armani or Escada garments for around 40% less than retail? But even at that, you may have to hunt to find expensive, name label items on sale. And although thrift store clothing is usually far lower in price than what a vintage shop might sell it for, finding something vintage in thrift stores may be difficult, unless you go as often as you can or visit thrift store boutiques.

A five minute task that is saving me $750 A MONTH!
Copyright 2004 Richard Grady

As my regular readers will know, I often share my own online experiences in my articles in the hope that it will help some of you. As my regular readers also know, despite the fact that I have achieved a degree of success with my Internet ventures, I can be pretty lazy when it comes to the more mundane aspects of running an online business. It is usually these 'boring' tasks that end up saving or making me large sums of money (when I eventually get around to dealing with them!). One day I will learn..... :-)

Busy, Busy, Busy!!

Wednesday, September 22, 2004
Greetings Carlton's Corner Readers & Visitors!

It's been a busy few months here at Carlton's Corner, as you can probably tell by the light number of posts!! Here's why!........

Earlier this year, I introduced to the Quikonnex community my long-time gift & collectibles site, CarltonsGifts.com and the Carltons Gifts Channel.

In July, Kim Bloomer and I introduced our new advertising services site, KickTheEmailHabit.com and the KTEH Channel.

In July and August, we added TWO NEW EBOOKS and a brand new KTEH Article Bank.

At the same time, we were working with the International Virtual Women's Chamber of Commerce (IVWCC) to bring them into Quikonnex and we established, and are still working on, the IVWCC Channel.

At the beginning of the month, Kim and I established a new Christian devotional and informational channel, Sharing Spirit.

With all that techie, geeky stuff to do, my softer side was screaming for attention. What started as an innocent purchase of a few beads to make something for myself, apparently unleashed a creative spirit. Before I knew it, the house was overflowing with beads and beading supplies. Even my husband has gotten into the act and is learning beadweaving! Now I have dozens of creations - men's chokers, women's necklaces, earrings, bracelets...and more beads than I imagined even existed! Since I'm also a Quikonnex addict with a burning desire to help expand Q beyond the techie, geeky and marketing focus, I decided to establish yet another channel! So.......

INTRODUCING!......

Cathy's Creations!

On this new channel, I'll be offering for sale my bead creations as well as articles, tips and even occasional bead deals for other bead enthusiasts out there. If you don't see something you like, I can work with custom requests/orders.

I invite you to visit and SUBSCRIBE to Cathy's Creations. In fact, if you're not subscribed to Carlton's Corner, I'd love it if you would do so right now! Just check out the subscribe icons at the top of the page and click the one that works for your channel viewer. Don't have a channel viewer??.... Get QuikView Here! It's free and you'll get notification when updates are made to your favorite channels!

Hope to hear from you soon!

WHO LISTENS ?

WHO LISTENS?
by Steve Goodier

Two psychiatrists met at their 20th college reunion. One is vibrant, while the other looks withered and worried. "So what's your secret?" the older looking psychiatrist asked. "Listening to other people's problems every day, all day long, for years on end, has made an old man of me."

"So," replies the younger-looking one, "who listens?"

Unfortunately, that is too often a problem -- who listens? REALLY listens?

Techniques to Help e-Learning
by Catherine Franz

e-Learning is doubling yearly. Classes, e-courses, e-books on how-to and what-to appear by the thousands online weekly. In- person seminars and workshops are limited to location and access. e-Learning allows easy access, creation, and international distribution to a whole new world of experiences -- negative and positive.

An Open Letter . . .

I found this open letter today in my Articles folder. Even though it was released for 9/1, I couldn't resist publishing it. Hey, if Billy can take the time to write such a touching letter to his wife, the least I can do is take the time to put it "out there" for others to see and appreciate.

My husband and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary this coming Friday, so, Billy & Terry, Here's to many more happy years ahead! I pray my husband and I make it to our thirtieth too! Billy, God Bless You for still loving, appreciating and nurturing your wife after all these years!

Here's the letter:

Keep Your Home Happier

Keep Your Home Happier:
Kathy Gates, Professional Life Coach
www.reallifecoach.com

It turns out your mother was right after all -- Happiness really does begin at home, with the things and the people you are surrounded by. Your vision is one of the first messengers to send signals to your brain as to how it feels. Therefore, it follows that keeping your home happier will have a direct impact on how you feel.

What do you see in your home --Clutter? Chaos? Angry faces? What do you hear -- Loud voices; bad music?

What do you feel when you look around your home? Stress? Unhappiness? Frustration? UGGGGG!

What if instead you could feel and “see” opportunity and optimism? Energy and enthusiasm? Ok, maybe that’s going a little too far, after all it IS just the living room.

Try these ways to let your environment help make you happier.

Helping Mid-Life Employees Find Meaning

Helping Mid-Life Employees Find Meaning By Craig Nathanson, The Vocational Coach

People work to live, but most also live to work. A study on the meaning of work conducted back in 1987 revealed a strong attachment to work as a way of life. The study found that 86 percent of people would continue working even if they had enough money never to work another day. There could be no better indication that work is not simply a matter of putting food on the table, but is core to the being of most adults.
