Carlton's Corner - Issue #75

Carlton's Corner eZine
    Issue #75 - 12/31/03    Publisher: Cathy Carlton

Happy New Year ...... from Carlton's Corner!!

Hi Everyone!

Happy New Year!!......

The year 2004 will be a time of new beginnings for Carlton's Corner. Out with the old list and technology, in with the new! For many of you, this will be the last time you see an issue of Carlton's Corner. The reasons are many, I know. If you are holding off joining me at Quikonnex because of the Awasu software, please don't let that deter you. This is a learning experience for me too. While researching another subscriber's concerns about Awasu in regards to available space on her PC, I found that there is a QuikView viewer that requires no download. The biggest drawback is that QuikView is browser enabled, meaning you must consciously logon to it vs. having notifications sent straight to your desktop. If QuikView sounds like a more viable option for you as a subscriber, read more about it HERE.

If you want more info about Quikonnex in general, feel free to visit my new, and still evolving) website:
KickTheEmailHabit.com to get more info on Quikonnex. I hope to hear from you at my QChannel! If you choose not to join me there, I wish you all the best in the coming year. I hope your internet experience is prosperous and fun!

I'll be vacationing from 1/1/04 through 1/11/04. My internet access will be very limited, so please be patient if you send messages/emails to me. I have already completed the 1/7/04 issue and uploaded it, but Quikonnex users will get notification and will be able to view the issue on 1/7/04 as usual. Since I had to create the issue in advance, there will be no contest winner ads in that issue, but go ahead and enter and I'll double up on the 1/14 issue.

Speaking of contest winners, I have included the weekly contest winner ads in Sponsor's Corner and Classified Corner of this issue instead of creating a separate Q-item.

Well, that's it for now! Enjoy the rest of this issue!

All the best!

Special Edition . . .

Hi Everyone!

If you've been around Carlton's Corner for a while, you know that I often share wonderful stories sent to me by my friend, EJ. I know the ezine was just published this morning, but this story captures the essence and spirit of Christmas so perfectly that I just had to share it. If the woman in this story reminds you of someone, take a few minutes to make a difference.....at very least say a little prayer for them this beautiful Christmas Eve.

============================================

A Christmas Story

The Big Wheel

In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two.

Their Dad had never been much more than a presence they feared. Whenever they heard his tires crunch on the gravel driveway they would scramble to hide under their beds. He did manage to leave $15 a week to buy groceries.

Now that he had decided to leave, there would be no more beatings! , but no food either. If there was a welfare system in effect in southern Indiana at that time, I certainly knew nothing about it. I scrubbed the kids until they looked brand new and then put on my best homemade dress. I loaded them into the rusty old 51 Chevy and drove off to find a job.

The seven of us went to every factory, store and restaurant in our small town. No luck. The kids stayed crammed into the car and tried to be quiet while I tried to convince whomever would listen that I was willing to learn or do anything. I had to have a job. Still no luck.

The last place we went to, just a few miles out of town, was an old Root Beer Barrel drive-in that had been converted to a truck stop. It was called the Big Wheel.

An old lady named Granny owned the place and she peeked out of the window from time to time at all those kids. She needed someone on the graveyard shift, 11 at night until seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour and I could start that night. I raced home and called the teenager down the street that baby-sat for people. I bargained with her to come and sleep on my sofa for a dollar a night. She could arrive with her pajamas on and the kids would already be asleep. This seemed like a good arrangement to her, so we made a deal.

That night when the little ones and I knelt to say our prayers we all thanked God for finding Mommy a job. And so I started at the Big Wheel.

When I got home in the mornings I woke the baby-sitter up and sent her home with one dollar of my tip money--fully half of what I averaged every night.

As the weeks went by, heating bills added a strain to my meager wage. The tires on the old Chevy had the consistency of penny balloons and began to leak. I had to fill them with air on the way to work and again every morning before I could go home.

One bleak fall morning, I dragged myself to the car to go home and found four tires in the back seat. New tires! There was no note, no nothing, just those beautiful brand new tires. Had angels taken up residence in Indiana?

I wondered.

I made a deal with the local service station. In exchange for his mounting the new tires, I would clean up his office. I remember it took me a lot longer to scrub his floor than it did for him to do the tires.

I was now working six nights instead of five and it still wasn't enough. Christmas was coming and I knew there would be no money for toys for the kids. I found a can of red paint and started repairing and painting some old toys. Then I hid them in the basement so there would be something for Santa to deliver on Christmas morning. Clothes were a worry too. I was sewing patches on top of patches on the boys pants and soon they would be too far gone to repair.

On Christmas Eve the usual customers were drinking coffee in the Big Wheel. These were the truckers, Les, Frank, and Jim, and a state trooper named Joe. A few musicians were hanging around after a gig at the Legion and were dropping nickels in the pinball machine. The regulars all just sat around and talked through the wee hours of the morning and then left to get home before the sun came up.

When it was time for me to go home at seven o'clock on Christmas morning I hurried to the car. I was hoping the kids wouldn't wake up before I managed to get home and get the presents from the basement and place them under the tree. (We had cut down a small cedar tree by the side of the road down by the dump.)

It was still dark and I couldn't see much, but there appeared to be some dark shadows in the car-or was that just a trick of the night?! Something certainly looked different, but it was hard to tell what.

When I reached the car I peered warily into one of the side windows. Then my jaw dropped in amazement. My old battered Chevy was filled full to the top with boxes of all shapes and sizes. I quickly opened the driver's side door, scrambled inside and kneeled in the front facing the back seat.

Reaching back, I pulled off the lid of the top box. Inside was whole case of little blue jeans, sizes 2-10! I looked inside another box: It was full of shirts to go with the jeans. Then I peeked inside some of the other boxes:There was candy and nuts and bananas and bags of groceries. There was an enormous ham for baking, and canned vegetables and potatoes. There was pudding and Jell-O and cookies, pie filling and flour. There was a whole bag of laundry supplies and cleaning items. And there were five toy trucks and one beautiful little doll.

As I drove back through empty streets as the sun slowly rose on the most amazing Christmas Day of my life, I was sobbing with gratitude. And I will never forget the joy on the faces of my little ones that precious morning.

Yes, there were angels in Indiana that long-ago December. And they all hung out at the Big Wheel truck stop.

THE POWER OF PRAYER

When you receive this, say a prayer. This prayer will do. That's all you have to do. There is nothing attached. This is powerful. Just send this to four people and do not break this, please. Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive. There is no cost but a lot of rewards. Let's continue praying for one another.

Father, please bless my friends reading this right now. Lord, show them a new revelation of Your love and power. Holy Spirit, may You minister to their spirit at this very moment.

Amen.

Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both.

Passing this on to one not considered a friend is something Christ would do.

Leave room in your garden for angels to dance.

Special Edition - No Hopeless Situation

Friday, December 19, 2003

Carlton's Corner eZine     Special Edition - 12/19/03

In Today's Issue

Hi Everyone!

If you're reading this, you've taken the time to subscribe to my new Quikonnex publishing channel. Thank you for staying with me!

I have yet to hook up with the listhost rep. So quick to send an email to chastise me and demand "resolutions", they apparently don't want their responses in writing. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid, but who wouldn't be at this point?!?! LOL!!

I was running through the articles I received over the past couple of days and the one below seems so appropriate given current circumstances. I have pretty much decided to ditch my current list host because I'm tired of being treated like a common criminal. In normal business, one would defend their paying clients before so quickly jumping to conclusions. So I don't think I'll be moving my whole list anywhere. I have a complete backup copy, but I don't know that I'll do anything with it.

For now, I'll publish the usual weekly newsletters. I'll be vacationing from 1/1/04 through 1/12/04, so I will either upload for auto submission the 1/7/04 issue or skip it completely, depending on how much I can get done in the midst of this mess, the holidays, and vacation preparations.

For now, enjoy the article and please stay in touch! You're all very special and I wish you all the best !!

Until next time..........

NO HOPELESS SITUATIONS
by Steve Goodier

Dinah Shore said, "There are no hopeless situations -- only people who are hopeless about them." Case in point: Morgan Rowe. Some 30 years ago, when he was only 11 years old, he lost his left arm and much of the use of his right arm. It happened when he fell off a tractor at his father's fence company in Valdosta, Georgia, and was dragged beneath the machine. Morgan's left arm was destroyed and his right, mangled.

Young Morgan was released from the hospital after three-and-a-half months. The first thing he set out to do was to help pay the bills -- $30,000 worth. That was a lot of money back then as it is now. For a boy of 11 to accomplish such a task, the situation seemed hopeless.

For five years Morgan scoured roadsides picking up cans and bottles. He collected thousands of cans and collected and sold newspapers. He never gave up hope. First, he paid off the $455 ambulance bill. Then he put $2,500 down on the hospital bill. He was still a long way off though his parents raised another $9,000 toward the debt.

People began to hear about the injured boy and eventually some 2,000 donations poured in, totaling $25,000. The bill was paid in full! Morgan set aside the additional money for future education.

What then? Though the bill was paid up, Morgan kept his projects going to collect money for the hospital so he could help others.

Someone forgot to tell the boy he was too injured for that kind of work. Someone neglected to inform him that the situation was hopeless. Somehow young Morgan didn't realize that an 11-year-old boy could never pay off a hospital bill so large.

Martin Luther once said, "Everything that is done in the world is done by the hopeful." No matter your age. No matter your circumstances. No matter your financial wealth. Without hope, nothing is possible. But with hope...well...watch out!
