Be Aware but Don't Despair

Friday, August 29, 2003
If you receive a message saying 'you are spreading the sobig' virus, it's unlikely (although possible) that you are the offender.

This worm and its variants will pick addresses it has obtained at random and send messages that look as though you are the sender. If you receive one of these messages, please don't start yelling at the person who sent it to you as they likely aren't even aware that the message was sent to you on their behalf.

Being prepared in advance is still your best Protection. This is especially important when you have two or three nasty viruses and/or worms circulating at the same time. Always ensure that your virus definitions are up to date. It doesn't make much sense installing a virus protection program if you aren't keeping your definitions up to date. You can check your system right now using an online scan at HouseCall.

Another option is to check your overall security risks. Do you have open ports that will enable hackers to access your computer? Symantec offers a Security Check to determine whether you are at risk. Go to Symantec and on the left hand side, scroll down to Symantec Security Check. You'll have two option to choose from on that page.

If you scan your system and find a virus or worm, you might find the removal tool here:
Removal Tools

And while I understand that it is tedious trying to keep up with Microsoft and it's patches and updates, please at least check them out to see whether your system is at risk. Try this link for the updates - it might not be as busy.

Protect Yourself and Your Business

In today's lawsuit crazy world, it's more important
than ever to protect you and your business. If you
don't have the proper disclaimers and legal documents
on your website, you may not be protected. The FTC
is clamping down on sloppy business owners.

Hi there. I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.
Our heat wave finally gave way to some rain which was a blessed
relief. I love summer but you can see the signs that give way to
the fact that fall is just around the corner. Kids are heading
back to school and the leaves on the trees are starting to turn
to yellow here and there.

There are thousands of people wanting to start up businesses
online each and every day. Many of them are totally unprepared
for the realities of an online business. Why - because there is
so much hype surrounding just about everything they see. Your
online business is no different than a regular business down on
Main Street. It takes work - lots of hard work. John Colanzi
tells it like it is in today's Feature Article, The Three Pillars
Of Business Success. Get past the idea that everything will be
quick and easy on the Internet. This isn't a 'fast food' type of
business.

Also, keep in mind that YOU are the essential part of the
equation that will make everything work in your business. Our
Special Feature comes to us from Craig Lock. Fifteen Dynamic
Principles to Make Your Wildest Dreams Come True is an excellent
read and offers terrific advice to all netrepreneurs.

In British Columbia thousands have been evacuated from their
homes while others have lost all their possessions because of the
raging fires there. Please take a moment to put these people in
your thoughts and prayers. My heart goes out to them. They
haven't seen rain in over two months and no rain is in the
forecast while these fires rage out of control.

I've noticed a few of the old hoaxes have been floating around
again. You might want to make a note of this in your Favorites
list and refer to it when you receive one of those unbelievable
messages. Virus Myths and Urban Legends.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to show you the
new direction we'll be taking with KIT by next week's issue. I'm
so excited that it's really hard to contain myself. Some of you
have tried to 'guess'. But this will be bigger and better than
anything you've seen so far. That's a promise!

Let's get on with the rest of the issue. Have a great day and
keep on smiling!

Sobig Has Become So Big

Thursday, August 21, 2003
Did you wake up to a full mailbox today? Are you receiving strange messages suggesting you are spreading a virus? Be aware that this virus steals any email addresses it can - and not just from your address book. Any pages on your computer that contain an email address are vulnerable. They can be pages that are stored in your History files, Temp files as well as old web pages from your site that are stored on your computer. Your computer is scanned looking for email addresses.

The important thing to remember is that it may look like the message came from someone you are familiar with but they probably did not send the message - even though it looks that way. Please, please keep your virus definitions up to date. There's no point having virus protection if you aren't keeping the definitions up to date.

There are always rumors and mis-statements made when another virus hits. Woody's Office Watch does a great job explaining the ins and outs of this one. He suggests you can check to see if you have the Sobig.f virus by looking for WINPPR32.EXE on your system. If you find it on your computer, you can go to: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=100561 for details on how to remove it from your system.

Hi and welcome to today's issue of Keeping In Touch. I'd like to
extend a big, warm welcome to all our subscribers. We're happy
to have you with us.

It appears that 'just about everyone' has been experiencing hot
weather and high humidity. That really makes for a long day.
Then the eastern seaboard experienced that major blackout last
Thursday. Can you imagine it? Right at the start of rush hour
and no power; no lights at all; traffic tied up for hours on end;
streams of people walking along at a snail's pace. You realize
pretty quickly the number of things you take for granted. The
automatic teller machines (ATMs) at the bank; gas stations; air
conditioning; traffic lights that work; airports; subways,
elevators and escalators. That must have been a scary time
considering such a thing was not supposed to happen - not in
today's technology.
