Turning bad service into an opportunity

Monday, August 30, 2004

Everybody in business knows the importance of good service. But who knows the importance of terrible service? Guerrillas know it very well, and The Research Institute of America, which conducted a study for the White House Office of Consumer Affairs, sheds even more dismal light:

* The average business will hear nothing from 96% of unhappy customers who receive rude or discourteous treatment.

How A Child Riding His Bicycle Reminded Me Of A Profound Truth

Sunday, August 29, 2004

Have you had the pleasure of watching a child learn to ride a bicycle for the first time?

I recently had that pleasure with my 6 year old son Gabi.

We got his bicycle out and let him ride for a while ... with his training wheels.

We decided to take the training wheels off ... of course mom made him wear his knee pads, elbow pads and helmet ... nothing wrong with that ;)

Well, he DID ride the bicycle without the training wheels ... first,, a short distance ... then longer distance as his confidence seemed to grow. He probably rode it 50 - 100 yards or so ... without our assistance.

Which reminded me of something I learned long ago ... It's easier to STAY in motion while you are IN motion ... true with bicycles, true with life & business :) Once you get going, it's easier to STAY going. Sometimes starting seems to be worse than trying to climb Mt. Everest .

Isn't it sometimes curious how life will remind us of lessons we learned long ago, but seemed to have been 'shelved' for future use? That we sometimes get reminded of the most profound things with the accomplishment of a VERY simple task or goal?

Getting A Solid Internet Marketing Foundation

Profit Magician http://ProfitMagician.com

As we look at building our online businesses, many of us acknowledge, early-on, that we don't know it all. Those who don't, are almost certain to fail because they often attempt to apply techniques that simply don't work online - to their online businesses. The quickest way to online success is to model those who are already successful at what you want to do. It' s that simple.

Of all of the chores involved in building your business, marketing is usually the most critical. Poor marketing is also the reason so many businesses fail. You need to learn to
properly market your business or hire someone else to do it for you. I'll give you a few recommended resources to help jumpstart your education in a minute.

A second extremely important skill that goes hand-in-hand with marketing is generating publicity. You can have the greatest product in the world, but if no one knows about it,
it may as well not exist. If no one knows about you, then you won't make any sales!

Response to: 22 Reasons Why Email Is Not Dead By Christopher Knight

Sunday, August 01, 2004

I've taken a large portion of Christopher Knight's article "22 Reasons Why Email Is Not Dead" and have made some comments and interjected my opinions.

You may read Christopher's article here:

Thanks,

Phillip

1. It's not dead until I say it's dead. :-)

OK Christopher, I'll allow your humor here :)

2. RSS and XML do not pass "does my mother or father understand how to use it" test. Email passed the test, even though they needed my help setting up spam filters.

If your mother and father needed to be shown how to set up email filters, I'm of the opinion they can be 'taught' or 'shown' how to use RSS. People need NOT fear acronyms or technical sounding names.

Phil,
I liked your approach to this article by Chris Knight. While e-mail has still a lot of advantages, I appreciate your ideas for a newer way to communicate news on-line.

Phillip, excellent! This is one of the best dialogues I've read to date on Email vs RSS. Your discourse with Chris is refreshing.

As a Co-Founder of Quikonnex, I would like to say that I personally would like to see email get fixed. There's a lot of turf wars with the big guys going on now with Sender Authentication. There's money to be made by the one that can capture this concept. MS is definitely going after this. The goal? Captured audiences... period. I would think AOL would certainly be happy to keep AOLers reading only email from other AOLers and their select group of advertisers. RSS/XML goes way beyond being an alternative way to deliver newsletters. We're just scratching the surface now on how everything we're doing a Q can help a publisher/website owner simplify their lives.

Hi Chris,

Thanks ... I'm glad you took my opinions and comments as good natured :)

I'm thankful you saw my humor ... maybe we won't agree on everything, which is fine. We can still be friends and if necessary "agree to disagree" on points and opinions.

Interesting feedback Phillip. :-) Only one comment about your statement, "Ouch ... I would hope our family and friends would be the center of our lives as opposed to email. This almost comes acroos that Christopher MAY be addicted to email."

On the contrary. I think I'm currently addicted to the power of RSS. How ironic, eh?

Lastly, of course friends and family are more important than email or RSS any day.
