A Letter From The Ultimate Host:
As many of you noticed, the network was performing at below optimum levels for several hours on 1/29/04. This degradation in performance was caused by a massive distributed denial of service attack,
which caused our BGP peering sessions to "flap" (drop/connect repeatedly) at random intervals. As a result of this BGP flapping, some networks implemented route-flap-dampening, to mitigate the ripple effects of the
flapping.
Throughout the day, the staff worked with the members
of law enforcement, as well as various network operations center staff, for networks that were involved in the attack, to ultimately bring the attack to an end.
We apologise for the inconvenience these criminals [who launched the attack] have caused you by impacting your day to day operations with regard to your hosting services and network.
The staff deployed a new Cisco GSR-12000, during the early
morning hours of 1/30/04,replacing an aging Cisco 7513. The GSR-12000 is more able to absorb an attack such as we experienced, on 1/29/04, without impacting network performance.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email or telephone.
Sincerely,
Joe Sansoucie
