It Truly Is a "World-Wide" Web

Let me tell you a quick story that started way back in 1962...

An Idaho farm boy stepped off an airplane in the Central American country of Belize (then colonial British Honduras) as one of the first Peace Corps volunteers. He carried little more than the clothes on his back and his prized possession - a tennis racquet.

There he met a Missouri school teacher, fell in love, got married, and 5 years later yours truly appeared on the scene.

Fast-forward a little over 4 decades and see just how much the Internet has impacted the entire planet.

Last week my family took a cruise for our summer vacation.

Since the itinerary included Belize, my parents planned to take the opportunity to renew friendships and show us their old haunts.

On the surface it seemed simple enough, but as the week progressed I realized just how much the Internet permeates our lives, no matter which part of the world we call home.

Once a day for the entire week I checked my email onboard ship. Despite the $.50 a minute cost to use their satellite connection, it never ceased to amaze me that I could instantly communicate with business associates via email from the middle of the ocean.

But the most amazing thing happened when my father got an email onboard ship from one of his old friends, who also happens to be the first Prime Minister of Belize, Mr. George Price.

Before we left on our trip, my dad let Mr. Price's office know he would visit the country briefly and wondered if we could stop by for a few minutes just to say hello.

On Tuesday my father got an email through the ship's office that Mr. Price wanted to meet us at his office on Friday. Just think about that for a second...

One man in another country tracked down my father hundreds of miles out to sea on a ship simply by knowing how to use the Internet.

Upon arriving at Mr. Price's office we met not only with Mr. Price, but also with the editor and senior reporter of one of the nation's two major newspapers, The Belize Times http://www.belizetimes.bz

Apparently my parent's return after 40 years rated quite a news story since the Peach Corps and similar organizations played a vital role in helping the fledgling nation take hold.

When I asked if we could get a copy of the article, the reporter told me it would appear on the Internet next week!

It turns out they not only publish their newspaper in print, but also publish most of each edition online so friends of Belize all over the world can keep up with current events.

These dedicated newspaper people manage to publish an entire weekly newspaper and distribute content not only nationally, but internationally via the Internet.

They literally use the power of the Internet to influence the course of an entire nation.

Even more amazing, information technology allows them to do it all without a huge staff or massive budget.

But to bring it back to a more personal level, upon arriving back at the port to catch our ship, our tour guide handed me her card and said, "Here's my card. When you or your friends come back to Belize, email me and we'll make all the arrangements for you."

Wow!

Now that's the power and reach of the Internet to impact people's lives on so many levels and draw us all closer together as one global community - one person at a time.

Spam Laws & Their First Result: The Blackmail

Spam Laws & Their First Result: The Blackmail
By Adrian Ghioc, Copyright 2003 All Rights Reserved.
A guy, from a certain country of the world, enters in an Internet Cafe, opens a free email account, gets a free autoresponder, and then ... starts spamming you. Every day you will receive his unsolicited messages.
Can the spam laws protect you? No way! You will never know who that guy, from the other side of the world, is.
However, let's suppose you do lose your time to find who the spammer is. Did you ever consider that the spam law, you believe to be protecting you, does not apply to that guy? Well, you should know that what's not legal in your country may be legal in another country, and vice-versa.
What kind of laws are these that do not protect you? And why have these laws produced an earthquake in the whole world of publishers?
Well ... unfortunately a few days ago I found out why!
Because these "laws" do not protect the good guys, but the bad guys!!!
So far the spammers were hidden behind a free email account, used maybe only one time. Obviously you had no "ammunition" to fight against them.
OK, you were able to filter that email address, but within one minute the spammer obtained another free account. So ... really no "ammunition".
A few months ago the new spam laws appeared on our table and the spammers scored another victory! We are afraid of these laws, but they are not. Some of them are no longer hidden behind an anonymous email address either. Now they attack you and use these laws against you; using another weapon: the blackmail!
A few days ago, one of my "subscribers" suddenly replied to the latest issue of my Ad Co-ops News, and warned me that he will report me as a spammer.
OK, I could understand if he forgot that he subscribed to my ezine and he also forgot he received it weekly during the last months. I could also understand a warning, that he will report me IF I will continue to send him my ezine. But he didn't ask me to remove him from my mailing list!
You know what he wanted?
For me to join a program using his affiliate link! (a long advert was inserted in his message) OTHERWISE he will report my email as spam!!!
Maybe you won't believe it, but the message was signed and this guy also provided an alternative email address (the back up address he provided when he signed up) and a phone number. (I wasn't so curious to spend my money calling a spammer)!
Join spammers' programs or you will be punished!
Now the spammers attack in the daylight!
Take care!

The Joy of a Small Opt-In List

The Joy of a Small Opt-In List
by Cathy Bryant
© 2003
The year 2003 is coming to a close. The new year will bring with it many changes for those of us who do business on the internet. Because 2003 has seen a tremendous change in the way we market, newsletter publishing has taken on new and often frustrating challenges.
With the advent of all the new regulations regarding online publishing, I became quite disillusioned. At one point I even made the decision to give up my website and newsletter entirely and focus my energies elsewhere.
I really had intended to close up shop.
Fortunately, the love that I have for online marketing won out (it always does). But in order to protect myself in the new era of government regulation of permission-based email marketing, I decided on a subscription method that no doubt was going to drastically reduce the number of subscribers to my newsletter.
And it did - no doubt about it. My subscription rate is now approximately 1/10th of what it was when I provided a simple form on every page of my website.
But what I've discovered is this - those who do choose to subscribe are those individuals who are sincerely interested in developing a home-based income. And their response to my publication has been nothing short of amazing.
My current list is small - much smaller than what I've had in the past. But not surprisingly, these subscribers have proven to be what I would call "hard core" home business enthusiasts. I've had that confirmed not only through the
correspondence I've had with them, but even with phone calls that I've received.
So in effect I have what could best be described as an intimate list made up of individuals who have either already ventured into a business of their own, or who have shown that they are much more than the proverbial "tire kicker."
These are people who recognize that nothing comes without hard work, and they are willing to invest the time, energy, and capital that it takes to develop home-based income streams.
Because the list is small - and no doubt will continue to be - I avoid the naysayers and negative thinkers that often permeate the larger lists. These are individuals who seem to take great delight in sending hateful, nasty emails to those who are in the best position to help them. I know I'm not alone among my colleagues by being on the receiving end of some of these tirades. I refuse to be a pawn in the head games that some of these people want to play; yet, it can still be disheartening at times. And the worst part is that it takes away from my ability to help those individuals who are sincere in their quest for success.
The bottom line is this - if you're a publisher and feel that you need to go for quantity when building your own opt-in list, I suggest that you consider the quality of your list instead. Small lists do not necessarily translate into
small profits.
By focusing your efforts on only those who are anxious to succeed and have shown that they trust your advice and recommendations, you eliminate the frustration that comes with answering countless emails and inquiries from the
merely curious.
It is then that you are free to help those who are anxious to help themselves!

Looking inside of your new business

Looking inside of your new business

Starting a home business is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.
You're facing a pile of scattered pieces and it may be a little uncertain
where to begin.

I think that the best way to begin is by taking a look inside yourself:
at your talents, abilities, interests, and personal motivations.

1. Make an objective list of your talents and abilities.
Ask friends and family what they think you're good at doing.
You must be skilled in your field; whether it's computer programming,
selling, cooking, baking, etc.

2. Make a list with activities you enjoy.
This often will point to natural skills and abilities, and can be directed
into business ideas.

3. Make a list about "how would I like to spend a perfect day" or a
weekend, a holyday, a vacation. On one hand, such kind of list will
help you understand your interests and personality. On the other hand,
it's possible to find some answers regarding your future venture just
reading between the lines

4. Make a list with products and services you receive.
Evaluate what is good and bad to everyone. If you find something is
bad, think how you could improve it. Please, give this evaluating
process your undivided attention, and you will discover few starting
points for your new business.

5. Make a list with products and services you need, but you can't
find yet You'll be surprised at how many new ideas will rise in your
head.

6. Make a list with what your friends and colleagues are saying they
want or need. Their comments may inspire you to start a new service.

Before starting filling and evaluating the above list, think that many
exciting businesses didn't even exist a few years ago. So try to be as
creative as you can. You need to think out of the box, you need new
pair of "glasses" in order to see potential business opportunities all
around you.

But take care, a good idea doesn't automatically translate into a success
business. There must be a market demand, I mean people willing to pay
for your product or service.

The final advice. It's important to be clear about why you want to start
a business, and what "success" would mean to you. You probably want
to earn money. It's ok, but how much ? Or may be you need a personal
status or to be recognized as an expert in certain field, but how high ?
