Unless you've just recently returned from a protracted space furlough cruising around the solar system, you are probably aware that the current Undisputed Heavy Weight Champ of Search is none other than Google a/k/a The Big Dawg of Search! What you may not know however, is how much of a Champ of Search they really are. Recent surveys and polls list Google as hogging more than a whopping 60% of global search market share.

In order to best understand how to keep your website in Google's good graces you first need to know what their ultimate goal is, or that of any search engine for that matter.

SEARCH IS BIG BUSINESS

Landing your web site at the top of search engines has become almost as important as the site design itself.

Just because you have a professional looking web site with a dot com address does not automatically put your web site at the top of search engines. You may not even end up on search engines at all which can render your site practically worthless if visitors can't even find it. Firsts things first, make a sitemap. This is how search engines will index your site. If you don't know how to make a sitemap there are many generators out there, just run a google search for "Sitemap Generator" and you will find many. Basically there are 2 types of sitemaps you will need to make.

One in .xml format which will be used by google and one in .html format that will be used by other search engines. The next step is to adhere to certain guidelines. Search engines look for web sites with good quality content that is keyword rich, meaning you include many keywords within your site that are searched for regularly. If you just set up an affiliate site with links to products and no quality information or content, chances are your site will not be indexed. If you create phishing sites or sites that mirror popular websites .com address with a slight difference in the spelling, chances are you will not be indexed either. Another key to indexing your site is having other sites that are already listed on search engines link to your own.

This is how web crawlers find your site and index it. This can be achieved by finding relevant web sites with a listed e-mail address. You can send the web site an e-mail offering to trade links which means they will place a link to your site if you place one to them on your site. Google offers a way to submit your site to them, however, if links are made to your site this is not necessary because web crawlers will find your site regardless. There are many pages on all respected search engines that will give you information regarding what they look for. High ranking web sites will attract alot of visitors and alot of potential revenue.
